Excerpt: Silver Eyes

“Hello, April Watt.”
April backed against a tree, her shadow moving to an unnatural position in front of her. “How do you know my name? What’s your name?”
The man with silver eyes laughed softly. “Oh, don’t worry about that. I’m not going to harm you. My name is Joseph Stram.” The girl with grey eyes waited a short distance away.
April’s shadow shrunk closer to her and seemed ready to pounce. “Why have you been following me?”
The man hesitated, his silver eyes startled. “How did you know that?” He glanced down to her contorting shadow. The man relaxed. “Ah, umbrakenesis.”
“What?” April pushed herself further into the tree behind her.
“Umbrakenesis,” the man repeated, “It is the wonderful ability to control shadows and dark, however, it is not necessarily an evil power. April Watt, do you have umbrakenesis?”
April lowered herself to the ground with a innocent face. As soon as her knees touched the sandy ground, her face switched to a wicked expression. “Let me show you,” she snarled.
April fell into Shadow and momentarily disappeared from view. Despite his situation, Joseph Stram felt a thrill of excitement at her show. “Impressive. Isn’t she, Jasmine?”
April jumped back out of her shadow, dragging the shadow with her body like tar. Clothed in complete black, April stood defiantly before the silver-eyed man.
A darker hole somewhere on her face was her mouth. It opened. “Leave us alone,” Shadow growled.
She turned and jumped into the shadow of the tree, disappearing from sight.
“You don’t see that every day,” commented Joseph Stram.
