So, what are you writing about?

I have no real plot, just this strange image in my head of where i know this idea has to start and end.

i can't really explain it, except that its kinda in the future, and involves a lot of rain.

But the point is, what are you all writing? Post some plot summeryness here! :) if you dont have one, lament your misfortune.
Last-minute Whimsical Write-in/Meet-up thread (Boulder Edition)

If you're going to be out-and-about in a NaNoWriMo sort of way, and you'd like to invite your fellow area Wrimos to drop in, post on this thread!

For maximum happiness, an invitation should include location and timeframe. Timeframes can be formal ("from noon until three") or exceedingly casual ("from now until I'm ready to go home.") This isn't a thread for meticulous planning. It's a thread for finding yourself at Brewing Market/Vics/IHOP/etc. with time on your hands and looking for that energy boost you get from sharing some time with people who share your creative goal.

Also, specify if the space/time you're inviting Wrimos to share is a "Ssh! trying to write, here!" sort of occasion, or more of a "Woo, time to blow off some steam!" sort of occasion. Or if it's somewhere in between, like "I'll be over here writing but don't let that keep you from saying hi!"

It's also useful to mention how Wrimos dropping in on you will recognize you amongst all the other coffee-shop-with-laptop patrons. "I have a NaNoWriMo table tent on fluorescent yellow cardstock" or "My Dell Inspiron laptop has multiple NaNoWriMo stickers" is awesome. Descriptions of distinctive clothing items work too, as do descriptions of where in that public place you'll be ("At Conors, at that rectangular table allllll the way in the back by the dart board, 'cause that's where the electrical outlet is").

I'll get it started with this not-at-all hypothetical example:

I will be at the Teabox (downtown Boulder, 15th and Pearl)
today, Tuesday, October 27th,
from noon until probably 3ish.

I'm a short gal with my hair in a bun and wearing a black T-shirt with a red Halloweenish-looking devil dude on it. My 15.4" Dell Inspiron laptop is full of NaNoWriMo stickers.

I'll be working on various writing projects (including brainstorming for Nano!) in a casual sort of way. I'd love to meet and chat with other Wrimos (who are, perhaps, also brainstorming against November 1...)

Tuesdays at the Teabox are going to be a regular weekly feature that I'll put on the calendar, but since the calendar is still not up ye (I'm working on it!), here ya go!
End of Weekend Goals?

I always find it easier to write when I sit down and say "I want to make /this/ before I stop", or "This is what I want to accomplish today".

So how about a whole weekend?

I'll give myself a range. 25k at minimum, 30k at an optimistic maximum.

How about you guys?
Saturday Afternoons @ Healing Tea (Boulder-Area Write-Ins)

Since it seemed to work out so well last week for the meet-n-greet...

I'll be at Healing Tea (33rd & Arapahoe) by noon today, November 7, drinking matcha and working on my novel. I may also be helping out in a blockade in Puzzle Pirates; it depends on how well I can multitask. And/or resist temptation...My characters were chattering away at me last night as I tried to get to sleep (too much late night coffee) and maybe I can put some of what they told me to work.

Look for the Nano-stickers on the Dell Laptop and the Nano-postcard acting as a table tent!

For free wi-fi, ask the cashier to lend you the password-info card that's standing by the register.
Teenagers Unite!

Hey guys.
So I was thinking.
I've never been to a write in or anything before. And I think thats because I always feel like I am way too young and it would be weird. So perhaps we could organize a teenaged/high-school write in at some point? It'd be cool 8)
I know some of the more nanowrimo supporting schools have their own write ins and stuff (I know fairview did when I was there as a freshman) but mine doesn't, so I never get to meet any people through nano and it makes me a sad panda.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to make this work? I think the most concentrated area of teenaged nanoers is in boulder, so perhaps somewhere there?
Friday Night Lgt Write-In at Panera Bread

We are meeting at Panera Bread in Longmont for a write-in TONIGHT Friday, 11/6/09. We will either gather around the fire if it is a small group, or try to get the back room. You can order food as well as drink here, so come hungry!

Panera Bread is at 425 Ken Pratt Blvd, Longmont. It is in the plaza east of Main Street on 119.

QUESTION: Would you like this event to repeat every Friday in November? Would you like it to repeat every Friday except the 13th so we can join the Boulder Mid-November Party in Boulder at Cafe D Amore (2850 Iris Aver), details TBD?
OR, would you like to host our own Mid-November Party here in Longmont on the 13th?

Boulder Friday Night Young Drunk Edition

I intend to spend my evening at the Laughing Goat on Pearl, intermittently drinking coffee and beer to push me into a state of late-night delirium genius so I can catch up on my real work after an exhaustive week of school. I'm interested in talking plot with folks, getting a few thousand words writ, making caffeine and alcohol duel in my belly, and just generally gettin down to it. Highly recommend some of you come down. I'll show up around 8, and I'll do something so you recognize me instead of sitting there wondering who among you is secretly writing a novel behind their laptop.

Longmont Carpool to Boulder Mid-November Party

Cheryl (Aenai) is willing to drive to Boulder for the party onthe 13th from Longmont. I will be riding with her. She has room for 2 others, possibly 3. We are coming from southwest Longmont. If you can meet us somewhere close to Niwot or Nelson and Airport road in Longmont, that would be good. If not, let's talk!

Also, if you already plan to drive from Longmont to Boulder for the party, let us know. Perhaps we can have a caravan.
Friday Evenings @ Brewing Market, Baseline (Boulder-Area Write-Ins)

It's on the calendar from 6:30 until 10:00 PM (closing time). You can of course get there earlier or later as you choose. I'll try to be there right at 6:30 with my NaNoWriMo Postcard Onna Cardboard Tube.

Brewing Market can be notoriously crowded with C U students studying for mid-terms and so forth. That factor tends to lighten up a bit on weekends, though, so we should be OK. Let's give it a shot and find out.

Also, for those who get a bit hungry mid-way through a writing session, and want something a bit more substantial than a Breggo, the Baseline Brewing Market is next door to BeauJo's Pizza, which is yummy and open until 9:30 PM tonight.

Technical note: Both Brewing Market and BeauJo's have wi-fi, so it's possible you'll find yourself within range of both signals. If your laptop starts randomly hopping between the two, put the network of the place you're not at on "Manual" or deselect "Automatically Connect" in its wireless network properties.

Also, if you'd prefer a rowdier atmosphere or are looking for someplace to be after the Baseline options have closed, Keith has said he'll be at Laughing Goat tonight, Friday Nov. 6, looking to drink heartily and talk plot in addition to writing a good thousand words. So there are options tonight!

Thursdays Evenings @ Flatiron Coffee (Boulder-area Write-in)

Lady Doom has alerted us to the existence of Flatirons Coffee via the "Write-In Locations" thread. It used to be the Peaberry's at 28th and Arapahoe. It has tasty coffee and has demonstrated its appropriateness for Getting Novel Done.

It's on the calendar as 6:30 PM to 9:00 PM. Feel free to get there earlier, but they won't let you stay later 'cause 9 is closing time.

Lady Doom, as our gracious write-in host, would you like me to bring you a table tent or similar identifying sign for helping Wrimos figure out which hard-at-work faction is us? I can print something right up.
Blogs & Other Inspirational Web Sites

Just got this from the Writers Guild in Second Life:

Lynn Viehl's blog, http://pbackwriter.blogspot.com/ , contains all sorts of helpful hints and writerly goodness. She recently posted a great NaNoWriMo sort of pep talk. Here is an excerpt:

Paperback Writer wrote:
If you're participating in NaNoWriMo this year, you've probably already gotten started with writing your novel. If you haven't and you want to, no worries, there's still 26 days left to write. If you start today. Which means, you should start today.

You're starting today, right? Don't make me get my writer whip.

The first week you spend writing a novel is usually terrific. The idea for your story is new and bright and shiny. You've got all sorts of cool characters to play with on the page. Your energy level is as high as your enthusiasm. This is a wonderful stage in writing a novel, one most of us love because the work doesn't feel like work. It feels like fun.

Next week it's probably going to feel very different, so enjoy these golden days.

This is also the week you can establish some good writing habits to follow for the rest of November. I think the most important one is to resist the urge to repeatedly backread and revise....

The whole thing is at http://pbackwriter.blogspot.com/2009/11/mid-week-nanopost.html (it's currently her latest post but won't be her last to do with NaNoWriMo, count on it).

If you'd like to share URLs full of writerly inspiration, share them here!

We are meeting for a write in this Thursday, November 12 from 7:00pm to 10:00pm at Cafe Luna in Longmont. Cafe Luna is at 800 Coffman St, at the northeast corner of Coffman and 8th Avenue, just east of Roosevelt Park.

EDIT
QUESTION: Do you want this write-in to repeat every Thursday in November?
Longmont Write-Ins

I know we have tons of write-in topics, but a lot of them start in Longmont and then end up in Boulder, or have a lot of different types of write-in places one can go, but I'd like to try and usher them all into one thread so Longmonters can get everything into order. :3

I've already signed up for the Crepes a la Carte meet-up on Halloween, so I personally won't be able to make anything on Halloween, but feel free to discuss a meet-up that night.

Personally I'd prefer not to go to Ziggi's - it gets pretty crazy in there, and the plugs are few and far between - but of course any plans made are welcome to be posted here.

I'm looking for any places that are open later at night (always written better at night, personally) but any and all ideas and recommendations are welcome. :3

Hope to see most of you in November! Totally excited!
Live journal for locals

Hey all,

I've set up a live journal (with member only restriction) for locals who want to post bits of their story, brainstorm, inspire, and whatnot. I originally planned to use it for members of a local writing group (10th Muse,) and friends of mine who are writing at CU, but I thought it would be nice to share it with more locals, especially if we'll be meeting at write ins.

If anyone would like to join, pop on over to http://community.livejournal.com/inspirationspot

I look forward to meeting my fellow Boulderites as the month progresses.

Good luck all!

Write In Locations

Since the Tea Spot closed, I've been wondering about new locations for writing. I've become a big fan of the Tea Box at Pearl & 15th. Let me know if you've approached them about being a write-in location, and if not I'll do it. See you all in November.

Second Life Resources: The NaNoShrine & NaNoCafe

For those of y'all with accounts in Second Life (or who are considering creating a free account, creating an avatar, and exploring a virtual world!), here's a resource you'll want to make note of:

NaNoShrine and NaNoCafe - Inworl, sLiterary (113, 170, 26)
SLurl: http://slurl.com/secondlife/sLiterary/113/170/26
Associated Groups: "NaNoWriMo SL", "SL Wrimos"

(To join a group: Use SL's "search" interface, choose the "groups" tab, and enter the name of the group you want. Pull up the group's info/profile via the button in the search results. Use the "Join Group" button on the group info main page.)

When you teleport to the NaNoShrine and NaNoCafe location, you're standing in an outdoor lounge area made to look like a giant book laying open upon a ground made of giant crumpled up sheets of paper. You can lounge in the armchairs there and just take a break...

...or you can turn around and enter the NaNoCafe. This is a little diner, sort of Waffle House style, with booths and a counter. Laptops are available to type at--just right-click on one of them and choose "Type!" from the radial menu. Your avatar will sit down in front of that computer and start typing at it.

(If you want an animated laptop of your own, to "wear" such that you can be typing on a laptop anywhere in SL, talk to group member Ina Infinity. Or talk to me in-world - she gave me one, and I can give you a copy.

Outside is a red block with two "timers" attached to it. (Actually, these are counters. About that, more in a moment.) This is the interface for the NaNoWriMo SL Word Count Database! Click it, then simply speak your current word count into Local Chat within the next 60 seconds. This will do several things:

* It will add your word count to the overall progress of the group of people using it, allowing the two "clocks" to be updated--one shows average words per author, and the other shows the total words of the whole group (in 100,000s).

* It will automatically TWEET your word count update! Check it out: http://twitter.com/vwnanowrimo

* It will update your word count personally, so that if you are wearing the "SL Participant Word Count on Head - 2009" object, it will show anyone looking at your avatar how awesome you are in terms of words!

(Where do you get this magic Word-Count-On-My-Head object? Just click the small yellow box with the NaNoWriMo Shield Logo that's sitting in between the two big counters, and accept the notecard it gives you. There are links in that notecard to get you landmarks and the word count object.)

Update often! Apparently, there will be daily prizes. And if you cross that 50,000-word finish line, your avatar name will be added to the NaNoShrine, which stands behind the lounge area and joyfully proclaims the names of the 2008 and 2007 winners.

Also, if you join one or both of the groups listed above, you'll get notified of any events--parties, write-ins, you name it. And the "Word of the Day" will be delivered to you via group notification, just in case you'd like the extra challenge of working that word into your day's writing. (Day 1's word was "predilection." Day 2: "disassociate." I have not seen a Day 3 word come through yet.)

Happy exploring, and see you in SL!
Second Life Resources: Write-Ins at the Milk Wood Gypsy Camp

On Mondays, Wednesdays(?) and Fridays at 2:00 PM our time (1:00 PM Second Life Time), writers gather to animate their avatars about various writing tasks, talk with each other about writing and current works in progress, and just let the noise of the typewriters motivate them to keep the words flowing.

The Milk Wood Gypsy Camp - Milk Wood Writers, Awen (164, 32, 21)
SLurl: http://slurl.com/secondlife/Awen/156/66/2
Associated Groups: "Writers Guild"

(To join a group: Use SL's "search" interface, choose the "groups" tab, and enter the name of the group you want. Click the search result link and then the "View Full Profile" button to pull up the group's info. Click the "Join (L$0)" button.)

Picnic tables in a lovely forest clearing are furnished with various writing and reading implements. Right-click a typewriter and choose "Type!" to sit at it and type. Right-click a sheaf of paper and choose "Write!" for the longhand animation; there will be an object nearby that will give you a pen to "wear" if you click it. You can click another object to receive a small book, then "wear" it and use the "Read!" animation to sit and read.

It's just a very pleasant place to be, to chat with other writers, and to use the oddly effective energy of the animations to motivate yourself to write in "real life."

I really recommend joining the Writers Guild if you're a writer and you frequent Second Life. They are constantly sending the group event notices: open mics, poetry workshops, readings given by published and aspiring authors. And of course this: write-ins at Milk Wood on Mondays and Fridays for sure, maybe on Wednesdays too, at 2:00 PM Mountain Time (1:00 PM SLT). Perhaps I will see you there today!
Longmont Writer in Residence

I will be hanging out at Vic's Espresso as Writer in Residence again this year. (Well, same location, different shop. Use to be Deja Brew sniff!) PLEASE NOTE: I have changed my hours slightly.

Hours for my residency are:

Mondays 4pm to 6pm
Wednesdays from 10am to 12 noon
Sundays 12:00 to 2:00

This will be posted on the calendar as soon as I get myself over there to the widget and make it happen.

The Writer in Residence gig is just to let WriMos in the area come and write or talk about your novels, get advice, or just blow off steam. Whatever makes sense. If we get a diverse crowd, we can break into two tables: one for talkin' and one for writin'.

We can even use the Writer in Residence hours for write-ins. I've already approached the staff about it, and they seem cool. I have yet to talk with the owner, Rob, but I do not foresee any problems with meeting there at any time.
NaNoWriMo Kick-Off in Second Life!

I just got a couple group notices from the Second Life group "NaNoWriMo SL", subject header "Kick-off Party!"

First off, y'all all know what Second Life is? OK. It's a virtual world. Think of a chat room / instant messaging, only with scenery and widgets and buildings and stuff. For more info: www.SecondLife.com & https://join.secondlife.com/ . Basic accounts, which is all you really need, are free.

Now, once you're in Second Life, you can subscribe to different groups that share your interests. For those of a writerly persuasion (aren't we all?) I recommend the following:

Writers Guild
NaNoWriMo SL

Just use the Search interface, choose the Groups tab, search for those names (one name at a time) and then pull up the group info and click the "Join Group" button. Once you join those groups, you will get notifications of events, like poetry workshops and parties and open mic readings and even write-ins where you can sit your avatar down at picnic tables and animate it to look like its typing or writing or reading a book. It's really cool.

OK! So there's a kick-off party in Second Life for NaNoWriMo! Here's the details:

Quote:
What: Halloween Kick-Off & Costume Party
Where: Rusalka Callisto's Private Yacht
http://slurl.com/secondlife/Capel/100/120/21
When: 11:00 p.m. PST

Hang out aboard a private yacht for a west coast NaNoWriMo Halloween kick-off party. Come dressed in costume for a chance at a $500L price awarded at 11:45 p.m. Or just come as you are and hang out on our dance floor, in our oceanside pool, our lounge areas or wherever! Music and horror TV piped in, which you can shut off with a click. Halloween-themed snacks & drinks and NaNoWriMo party games such as "Pick a Word" and "Random Plot Point".

(Do note that the prize is in in-game currency, not US dollars. There is a currency exchange, but it takes about L$260 to equal one US dollar.)

You can click the "slurl" above and it'll take you to a web page that'll automatically launch the Second Life viewer (if you have it installed) and, once you log in (if you have a login) it'll transport you to the location. I'm standing there now, but as the party hasn't started yet, the yacht is not yet at the dock. Remember that SLT (Second Life Time) is equivalent to Pacific Time, so the party will start right at midnight for us.

I'll post more about Second Life stuff as we go, maybe upload a screenshot of the Milk Wood Writers' Meet (the picnic tables with writing animations area).

...are on the schedule.

Nevertheless, the dreaded Renovations have hit the Tea Box, and today it is closed. When Tea Box opens up again, Tuesday Lunchtime Write-ins will resume there. Until then, our back up is THE CUP, on the very same block of Pearl but about five doors to the east.
Write-ins for high schoolers!! <3~

Hey guys!!! I am such sister spoken of by Alienor on the "teens unite!" forum. I am the leader of the creative writing club at Niwot High School and we have been having extra meetings on the weekends at Ziggi's from 2-4 about. =D We haven't had a whole lot of people coming, and now that NaNo has started up, I would be so excited if you guys wanted to come too. ^^ I'm also willing to host any other write-ins for this age group in the Longmont area. I hope this has helped, I know it can be super intimidating if everyone is way older than you. ^^
About myself: I am a senior at Niwot High School right now, not in IB so I have quite a bit of extra time now that marching band season is over. <3~ I made the 50K word count the past 2 years and I'm so psyched to try it again!!!!
=D SO yeah!!!!
HOW ABOUT: we meet this saturday, November 7th at 2pm in Ziggi's
who thinks they will come? =DDDDD <3~ *raises own hand*
In case you need to locate me I'll be with the adorably small dark blue laptop, I have short blonde hair and I'll be the one spazzing strangely. XDDD <3~
anybody else have some awesome ideas??
Meet & Greets: Post suggestions here!

Sounds like we have more Longmonters this year interested in write-ins and meet and greets!

I will be back in town on the 28th, so any time after that, I'd love to participate in a meet & greet. Please feel free to arrange an earlier meet if you are getting antsy. Just post it to this thread.

I've heard people mention the follow Longmont locales, which are all good:

The Human Bean -- I haven't been there yet, but I believe Alex when he says its conducive to writing. Alex, let us know what feedback you get about have a bunch of writers there. I am guessing that they would love to have us. If you could post their hours here, that would be good.

Borders at Hover Road -- I've been here. It is open until 9:00pm, I believe -- if someone knows the exact hours pleas post them here. I bet they wouldn't mind us meeting there for writing or meet & greets. Faewing, could you check the hours and propose times for write-ins here and a meet & greet time on the meet & greet thread (which I will start in a moment if it isn't started yet.)

Longmont Library -- this is a good spot. I believe it is open to 9pm as well. Would the person who posted that they write at the library suggest possible meet & greet time?

Vic's Espresso -- hours are 6am to 6pm, so it is good for weekdays and weekends. I suggest we try a meet and greet there on Saturday, 10/31 from 2pm tp 4pm. I'll happily host that.

Please add more places to the list, if you like.
