UCF Writers UNITE!

I noted that there were a bunch of UCF writers on here. Anybody want to do a meet and greet on campus sometime? I know there's a coffee shop on campus, but that's just as arbitrary a location as any. Suggestions?

I still haven't written a word! Ack!

I have been busy handling moving, school, band/shows and work. I thought that I wouldn't be able to do NaNo this year after some careful thought, but the guilt has slowly been pecking away at my conscience. I have this story idea that is screaming to be free! So I will make a lower priority attempt anyway. Sigh. I will be coming to the Waterford write in to see if my spirit can still be energized for NaNo!

I wish I could turn sleep off for the month of November.

Hurray for MLs!

It's National Munincipal Liason Appreciation Day!

I know I haven't been to any of the write-ins (finances are tight for me this NaNo), but I just wanted to take the time to thank the MLs for everything they've done to help make this NaNoWriMo a smashing success thusfar! From setting up the calendar of write-ins to creating the NaNOrlando blog and everything in-between, we have a lot to be thankful to our MLs for this year. Please take some time out of your day to thank them for all their hard work whether by NaNoMail, in person, or even on the forums.

Thank you, MLs!
Deland/Stetson Write In

Hello,

I know in past years there have been people in the Deland area on these forums; since I'll be in the area next Sunday (11/8) I'd like to host a write-in while I'm there. However, I'm having a hard time finding a location open on Sunday since I only the internet available to look for a place. If anyone in the Deland/Stetson area knows of a good place for a write-in (they have seating for a small group to stay for a couple of hours and don't mind a small group sticking around for a couple of hours, and preferably have an outlet or two for computers or power strips to be plugged into) that is open on Sunday afternoon please let me know as soon as possible so we can firm up details for a write-in. :)

Thank you,
Official Write-ins

Hi all,

We're still a month out from November, but everyone wants to know about write ins. So here's what we're working on right now.

International Drive: Tuesday Nights - Whole Foods on Sandlake Road, probably from 6-9. We're checking to see if they'll donate the community room for our use. But it's an excellent afterwork meeting place because it has it's own food buffet as well as plenty of take out food in the same center. (Both MLs will be at these meetings.)

Waterford Lakes area: Saturday afternoons - Waterford Lakes. Hosted by Marie. Probably the Barnies. This will be a bit of a test location. I live minutes from there but have had trouble finding good spots to meet since it tends to be crowded. I've walked into Paneras and not been able to find a single seat open. (If Waterford Lakes is crowded, I'm wondering if people would want to move down the road to Bubbalous BBQ for writing with food.)

Altamonte Springs: Detail being arranged. Probably Saturday or Sunday, hosted by Elizabeth.

Colonial Drive: Sunday 5-7pm at Starbucks in Colonial Plaza, at Colonial Drive and Bumby Av. These meetings are hosted by the Wannabee Writers. They are an established group that meets throughout the year but who are opening up their meetings for November. And perhaps they'll find some members who want to stay after November.

We're open to other experienced members or existing groups holding meetings. We'd like the area or time to be unique enough that it doesn't class with an existing meeting. And we're trying to make Tuesday's the core meeting night since we have both MLs on site. But that leaves plenty of opportunity.

Note: We are imposing some rules this year -- if you propose a meeting, you are the host for that meeting and responsible for arranging all details. We don't want to hear about meetings that are advertised on the forums where the person starting the thread never shows. Also, we will limit people to ONE meeting announcement each week since despite the sincerity of the offers, we doubt one individual is going to make three different locations at the same time.
(We'll have a more low key "meet up" thread where people can post if they're heading out somewhere and just wondering who will join them. But we still don't believe you can be in more than one place at a time.)

So, if you'd like the be a meeting host, please post or email us the proposed details so we can see what works out best. We need:

Proposed day or dates and the time of the meeting.

The location, please include the address, number of people who can comfortably attend, parking details, whether or not there is free internet access or power outlets. Oh, info on potential food and drink is also useful.

Whether this is an ongoing group meeting or a Nano-only event.

I never thought I'd get this far, especially this soon!

Hi guys! It's Stuart, from the East Orlando NaNoWriMo writers' group!

I have to say that this has been the most wonderful challenge I've ever taken. I never thought I'd get even this far, and I never thought I could get this far this soon, but today . . . I crossed the 30.000 word mark. I'm 3/5 of the way through the challenge.

My work is a novel exploring the creation myths of the Lucumi (Santeria) faith. Some of you might know that the Lucumi religion comes from the Yoruba of southwestern Nigeria, and we share the same mythology.

I'm a bit disappointed in myself. I ran what I have of my novel by my godfather today, and it turns out that I have some of the events out of sequence. So I have to stop, backup, cut it apart and piece it back together again. It's going to take me a few hours to do that; however, once I'm done, to recapture the "flow" I have additional material and scenes to write. Once I write this additional material and scenes in the new order given by my godfather, more or less, my novel will be done.

At least the rough draft, that is.

I'm wondering how far the other members of the local NaNoWriMo group have gotten with their own work? Can anyone give updates?

Stuart (a.k.a. Ochani Lele)

It's happened, I've brewed my first late night pot of coffee

Who brews coffee at 10:00pm? Nano participants and college students, that's who. In an effort to catch up on my word count I just brewed an 8 cup pot of coffee...for myself (I can put another pot on if anyone needs some ;-) ). I feel like drinking coffee at 10:00pm is unwise and somehow is helping me to get through the block I've been experiencing tonight.

How many cups/pots of coffee have you had outside the normal coffee consumption hours???
Introductions

Yippee, the site is back and freshly scrubbed for 2009. So, let's do some introductions. No rules. Just anything you want to say.

I'm Tina Marie aka Marie Dees and I'm one of your MLs this year. I've done Nanowrimo every year since 2004, made my 50,000 words, and learned some tricks along the way. So, I should have some helpful Nano advice for those who get stuck.

A little background since people probably wonder about the mysterious MLs they find running Nano each year. I have an MA in Creative Writing from UCF which involved writing literary fiction. I've taught writing and spoken at writing conferences. I have two mystery novels published and one of my Nano-novels is published as a gay erotica novella. (So you are unlikely to write about a topic that shocks me.) I also edit for Mundania Press, generally working on projects for their romance divisions. I can be asked to tackle anything from Regency Romance to Christian Inspirational to well, gay erotica when it comes to editing.

This November will probably be devoted to writing another naughty novel because they are fun to write and relatively easy to tackle so I can devote time to the ML duties.

Last year there were a bunch of us who worked at the theme parks of the area. I thought this would be a good place to say 'hi' to each other. We were even able to arrange to have a few informal write-ins at the Polynesian resort last year. :-)

So I'll start off.

I'm Lunas, and I've worked at Disney for a little over a year now. I work backstage Magic Kingdom and I love it.

We'd like to thank everyone who made it out to the kick off parties today. We enjoyed being able to meet everyone.

And a special thank you to Linda and her group for hosting the Colonial Drive kick off. For the first time, we had two kick off events on November 1. And this year will have write-ins in locations throughout Orlando from Kissimmee to Altamonte.

Nanowrimo.org is already showing signs of being hit with heavy traffic. It's only going to get busier the first week of Nano. In the past, the site has gone down or just been very slow to respond. To keep you informed, we will be posting messages on the NanOrlando blog. We also have a link from the blog to the Google calendar for Write-ins. Bookmark the blog today!

Shameless self-promotion

I know we've got some writers in the group who might need a little shameless local self-promotion, so I'm starting it off.

I have an entry in Loose-IDs' Hot Hooks contest. We had to enter a 100 word blurb and the first 250 words of our novel. There are 20 entries and votes will narrow it down to the top ten. Then we submit more pages and the editors pick the top winners for a publishing contract. So, if any ADULTS (naughty romance stories are involved) are inclined...

Go here:
http://www.loose-id.com/hothooks.aspx
You'll have to accept the popup if you block them (I wondered all day why I wasn't seeing the contest entries)
Go to the survey page for the contest.

My story is "Lair of the Jaguar God"

You can vote for 10 stories. My good friend Chrys entered "The Falcon and The Jackal."

Voting only lasts a couple of days. I'll let everyone know how I do. If I move forward in the contest, you'll get to watch your ML frantically try to finish a story for a publisher during Nano. Which means mine will actually have to end up in publishable shape.

What inspires you?

Let's get those creative juices flowing, what inspires your creativity? Is it a person, place, or something else?

For me, I am inspired by my dreams. What and where I want to be are a motivation and inspiration for me in everything I do or aspire to do. Of course, a beautiful day (such as the one we had this week on Wednesday with the 70 degree weather) was a nice change of pace and really made me not only feel good, but inspired my senses. Also, I love old and historic buildings and places. I like to think about all the history and stories they hold within them.
Subversive Stitch

Hey, its good to be back. Hope you are all ready to make this the year that you write the novel that becomes a best seller. I've been thinking about mind for a long time. Toooo long. I even set up a website with the same name and it has given me much fodder for my story. www.subversivestitch.blogspot.com I started it to keep me thinking about the topic, but it has turned into a fun community of stitchers with the most amazing work being talked about and shared. So in that respect, NANOWRIMO and this novel have already brought me much happiness. Hope all goes well for all of you!

Orlando Chat Room - Link

This year we want to make the Orlando region more web-friendly so those who can drive to write-ins or even those who just want to chat when a write-in isn't happening. So, we testing a free chat room. People are welcome to test it out before November. I've used this service in writing group with success.

http://tinychat.com/nanorlando

You'll need Flash and sometimes it doesn't work well with Google Chrome, so test a couple of different browsers if you have trouble getting in.
