CONTINUING WRITE-INS

Hi all,

Some of us would like to continue meeting and writing. Who else is up for it?

We could keep meeting at Border's. Wednesdays and Saturdays seemed to work well. I'd suggest picking one day and going with that for now, but if enough people want to meet two days, we could go for it and see what happens.

Any other suggestions? Other locations? Times? Days?

Still recovering....I've had more post-NaNo blues this year then usual! I really miss this crazy thing when it's over!

Hi All,

It's all too easy to let the momentum fade after November, what with the holidays and all.

I'll be at Borders, Santa Rosa this Saturday, 12/13, from 6-9. Anyone care to join me?

Pan-Bay TGIO Party

Dear Bay Area Wrimos,

While many of you may be excited about the wafting smells of roasted bird and mashed treats in a casserole dish, there is something else to look forward to! Next Friday, December 5, is the Pan-Bay TGIO party! It will be held from 8 PM - 11 PM at Root Division (www.rootdivision.org), located at 3175 17th Street, San Francisco, CA.

There will be crowns, a raffle, and a (completely voluntary) reading of NaNoNovel excerpts, as well as some free LiveJournal T-shirts and vintage SuperNano! T-shirts from 2004. It is an all-ages event, and your cheerleaders and significant others (and friends, neighbors, and fellow writers) are welcome, too! Whether you won NaNoWriMo this year or not, we want to see you there.

Don't forget to bring two different one-page excepts from your NaNoNovel for the wall display. (You should print them out in a large font, as the venue is a bit dark!)

While drinks and snacks are available, there won't be dinner at the event. If you'd like to have dinner in the city beforehand, Root Division is located in the Mission District of San Francisco, which is overrun with fantastic restaurants.

If you or anyone you know would like to volunteer your time to set up or take down the party, you can contact Tavia at tavia_stewart@nanowrimo.org. If you have any questions, feel free to email me at lindsey_grant@nanowrimo.org

We can't wait to celebrate you and your wordy accomplishments!

Lindsey and the NaNoWriMo team
WRITE-INS -- Santa Rosa -- Borders Books

Hi All,

Borders Books Cafe is also a great place to write, but like Peets in Petaluma, they are low on outlets, at least near the tables. So, charge your battery well, or bring an extension cord just in case (I usually have one with me, also).

BORDERS, SANTA ROSA WRITE-IN DETAILS:

Wednesdays: 6:00 - 9:00 PM (approx. -- come when you can)
Saturdays: 6:00 - 9:00 PM (approx. -- ditto)

In the cafe at: Borders Books, Santa Rosa, Santa Rosa Ave.
(in the same shopping center as Michaels, Aarons, and the old Compusa)

I know this is late notice for tonight. I'm about to head up there anyway, but I may not stay all the way until 9:00 But the next several Wednesday's are on schedule.

Hope to see some of you there.

FINAL WEEK WRITE-INS

Hi All,

Add any write-ins in here that you want to. I've listed the three below that I know about/planned.

There's a write-in at Borders, Santa Rosa (in the cafe) Wednesday night from 6-9. There will be at least three of us there, far as I can tell.

As far as Saturday at Peets, Petaluma East side (11 AM-1PM, and Borders Santa Rosa (6-9 PM) I will go if there's interest, but I don't want to be the only one there! For details about them, see the separate posts. Respond in this thread if you're thinking of going.

If you haven't crossed the finish lines yet, keep going....you can do it!!!

Hi Petalumans, and Sonoma-Marin folks who are doing NaNo this year (2008). I would like to invite each and every one of you to meet me at the Apple Box on the Petaluma River each Tuesday morning between 8am and noon for a Write-In.
[NaNoWriMo HQ] NaNoWriMo's Night of Writing Dangerously Write-a-thon

Hello Marin and Sonoma Wrimos,

NaNoWriMo HQ is excited to invite you to our second-annual Night of Writing Dangerously Write-a-thon. Come spend a blissful night of eating, drinking, and novel-writing with 200 Bay Area NaNoWriMo participants and staff!

The event is on Saturday, November 15. This year’s theme: NaNo-Noir. We’ll be summoning the spirits of Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett with chiaroscuro lighting, mood-setting background movies, and writing feats more dangerous than falling in love with a femme fatale. Beyond a Shadow of a Doubt, this will be a night you don’t want to miss.

How it Works:

All funds from the Write-a-thon benefit NaNoWriMo's youth and adult programs. To attend, just raise $200 or more in contributions through your easy-to-set-up Write-a-thon Firstgiving page by November 10.

Everyone who comes will get dinner, drinks, caffeine, a funny dinnertime talk by NaNoWriMo Director Chris Baty on 10 Years of NaNoWriMo Craziness, and a special Night of Writing Dangerously tote bag filled with books, writing software, and edible treats. You'll also have a chance to win raffle prizes such as museum passes, yoga classes, movie tickets, spa treatments, bottles of fine wine, and a baseball signed by Judy Blume.

The top three fundraisers will get to choose from special prizes, including a Dell Inspiron laptop, a 32 GB iPod Touch courtesy of Storyist.com, and an AlphaSmart Neo courtesy of Renaissance Learning.

As soon as you raise $200, send me an RSVP. If you raise $300 or more, you can RSVP for a guest as well. The ballroom has limited seating, so please RSVP as soon as possible!

For more information about the event, including photos and video from last years event, and to see a list of all the exciting raffle prizes, visit our Write-a-thon page.

Any questions? Drop me a line.

Hope to see you all there!

WRITE-IN -- Petaluma--Peets (East Side)

Hi All,

I'm off to a late start this year, but I think I've finally caught up!

Peets is a great place to write, but they are low on outlets. If your laptop has a three-prong power cord, then it's best to bring a power strip to extend the available outlet. I will try to have a power strip on hand just in case, and I always carry a regular extension cord for those of us with two prong power cords. Of course, if you're lucky enough to have a really good battery....

PEETS COFFEE, PETALUMA -- East Side of town

Saturdays from 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM
Washington Square Shopping Center
351 S. McDowell Blvd.
(Corner of McDowell Blvd and Washington Street.
There is easy access from the freeway, north or south.
Peets is to the left of the Safeway, across from Wamu Bank.)

Looking forward to seeing you,

Regional Write-Ins from around the bay... check 'em out

If you're going to be around the bay outside SF, be sure to check the other regional forums/calendars for details on local write-ins you can drop in on.

And if you're in another region and seeing this post, see where you might find yourself, and meet some random writers for yourself!

You can often find me at the Tuesday write-in in Mountain View, Thursday write-in in San Mateo, and the Sunday write-in in Campbell. The first two are very Caltrain-friendly. Campbell can be reached via Caltrain-to-VTA but it'll take you a while.
Bay Area Writers Retreat 2008 -- Space Available

Hi folks,

Those of you who've been around for a while have heard a lot about the Bay Area Writers Retreat. Twice a year a small assortment of bay area writers head off to a vacation rental for a long weekend of eating, drinking, talking, writing, and general productivity in the spirit of NaNoWriMo.

Check it out: http://retreat.andromedary.org/

We'll be gathering November 7-10 in Aptos, south of San Jose near Santa Cruz. We're renting a 7 bedroom manor house with beach access within walking distance for inspiration.

Due to record turnout (13) we sized ourselves out of our usual sites, so the cost is estimated (and the reservation fee is set) a bit higher than past years, at $350. This includes up to 3 nights of rustic resort living, all the food and drink you can imagine and then some, and prodding to get more words written than you thought you could do in one weekend. Meet your SF/Peninsula/South Bay MLs and maybe even see their pyjamas. How many NaNos can say they've done that? (the answer is probably 37.)

We had more up-front signups this year and almost no waiting-list interest, but there are a couple of last minute openings. So if you're thinking about going and can get your reservation fee in this weekend, you can still join us. Last year's ten attendees got just over 100k words done over the weekend, and somehow we didn't run out of Halloween candy or wine either. This year, maybe 150k! And how many of those words would help push your novel along?

If you're interested, email me asap at sfnanos at gmail dot com, and I'll answer any questions and help you get signed up.
West Marin

Anyone interested in starting a little group in West Marin? I can offer up my shack in Stinson for writing sessions or support get-togethers, or whatever. Any excuse to go to the beach, right? I will also gladly travel anywhere in West Marin to meet my peeps. Open to ideas. -fluffbrain
Start a group at school

I printed two of the NaNoWriMo flyers. Took them to the office and asked if I could print off more to post around the school so I could try to get a group together to participate. I'm waiting on permission from them to give me the go ahead!

I just wanted to throw this idea out there for anyone else who might want to do this. Unless you already have then that is great!

Happy Planning!
Write-ins in the city of Sonoma?

Are there any Sonomans out there who would like to meet for regular write-ins? Marin events, or even Santa Rosa can be a bit too much of a drive after a long day of work. I propose we schedule some social writing time close to home.

Barking Dog Coffee on Hwy 12 at Boyes Blvd. has outlets, snacks, comfy couches, and I've used it as a home office for hours at a time without so much as a dirty look from the friendly staff.

For those who prefer to novel under the influence, Murpy's Irish Pub also has outlets inside, and a wonderful staff who don't mind being invaded by crazy people. They also have the benefit of real food available, so we can write through dinner or lunch. Wednesday nights are crowded and noisy (Trivia Night!), but with the cold weather coming, Monday and Tuesday nights should be quiet. Weekend afternoons (especially rainy ones) are also great for tucking into a corner with an Irish Coffee and a laptop!

I'm not sure about any other potential places to set up camp, but I'm happy to do some scouting. Of course, if you have a favorite writing spot in town, let us all know!

So who's with me?
