I have this idea and I have no clue where to put it. Here goes.

It's set in the future but there's been a gient nuclear war that wiped out modern civilization so people are basically living just like they did in the middle ages except that they're even more religious. One of the ways they practice religion (christian, by the way) is that they follow the story of Jesus's life exactly. Ex, they only celebrate Christmas once every 30 years and twelve years later they have a festival for the temple etc. They also beleive that any child, especally a boy, born on Christmas is like another Jesus (they keep men and women apart for a year before Christmas so that no children can be born unless the "holy spirit comes"). The MC is a boy who's born on Christmas (his parents break the rules) and about all the adventures he has, etc. The main conflict is that Third Jesus (that's what they name him, there's already been a second one) is expected to follow Jesus's life exactly so he has to be crucified . . .

Any help would be apreciated! It kind of has elements of like every genre out there so I need help.

That'd be shelved on Science Fiction/Fantasy if it were in a shop, so either of those would suit fine. I'd say sci-fi myself.

Post-apocalyptic sci-fi.

Most of the stories I've written for NaNo have fallen into at least two categories, so I've learned it's okay to just choose the one I feel most drawn to. If you don't feel comfortable in the sci-fi forums, choose an alternate you do. This year I've just been scanning the forums that my story falls under, and answering anything that appeals. :)

It definitely has a lot of dystopian characteristics. So a post-apocalyptic dystiopian novel?

It's set in the future

wait, stop right right there, no need to go any farther! If it's set in the future it's automatically science fiction

Not necessarily. It MIGHT be science fiction... I've read several stories that are set in the future, but are pure fantasy, or even science fantasy.

Keep reading:

I take this to mean that there is no advanced technology. No advanced technology, no science fiction.

That's still post-apocalyptic science fiction. :P

You know I normally see "Dragonriders of Pern" novels shelved as science fiction, even the early ones that give no indication there's anything remotely sciency going on here?

Unless you give absolutely no indication of the backstory whatsoever, it's science fiction. And even if you don't mention it, realistically, every single trapping of modern civilization isn't going to be wiped out by nuclear war. There will still be ruins at the very least, train tracks with trains that no longer run, etc. Nuclear weapons don't magically wipe out every trace of higher technology, after all.

Science fiction and fantasy share the same shelves in every bookstore I've been to so I cannot comment on Pern.

And while it may be the case that some advanced technology survived, it would depend on when this nuclear war took place for me to label it science fiction. For example, if it happened tomorrow then it wouldn't be but if ti was in the (somewhat) distant future, then it would be.

In the Science Fiction course I took in University, the professor defined science fiction as "a story foretelling any possible future." It doesn't need to involve technology, just the distant future. Ever read 'A Canticle for Lebowitz"? Classic sci-fi, no technology involved for most of the story.

You might wanna consider the Religious section for help with parts of it, but I'd say it sounds like sci fi for the most part.

It's post-apoc, which means it's technically sci-fi. AND it falls under religious.

AND it sounds like just the kind of story I would love to read, so make sure you get it done!

So, when I read this, I was strongly reminded of elements from The Book of Dave by Will Self. Whoever wrote the Wikipedia entry thought that The Book of Dave was "post-apocalyptic," which seems to be one of those in-betweeners in science fiction and fantasy. Depending on how you go, though, I think you could consider it a combination of all three of these genres -- and, to be honest, everything that's been offered thus far sound like excellent options!

As an aside, good luck with your writing and I hope you win this year, as your novel sounds super-fascinating!
