It looks like this forum and the Mainstream Fiction forums are the only ones that are empty after the relaunch. I can't be the only one focusing on literary fiction this year. I feel so lonely. :(

Oh, you're not. Trust me. I am diehard litic...the novel I'm editing now definitely falls under that category, and whatever I write this year will as well.

lit fic? I will ALWAYS end up writing lit fic, it doesn't matter what my original aim was be it a simple sci-fi or a long and complex 1850s political drama tinged with magical rom com subplots. I'll join you here for sure.

I'm pretty certain I fall under literary fiction. It just seems to fit better than anything else. I'm so excited to get started! Even though I don't quite have my plot together yet...oh well.

Hey all!
I'm a little nervous, because this will be my first attempt at literary fiction, pretty much ever. I've always been a big fan of fantasy (especially urban fantasy), and some sort of paranormal element always ends up weaving its way into my stories. But, this year I'm going to step outside my comfort zone and explore the realm of literary fiction. I'm scared, but also totally pumped!

I can do any other genre, but one thing that's consistent is how LitFic-ish they all are.

I'm feeling your pain.
This is my first time on nanowrimo and ive just gone scrolling through the lists of mentors.
And of course it's all people specialising in Fantasy or Horror or Chick lit.
Where are all the lit-fic people???????????

I'm on that list of mentors. I didn't list Lit Fic this year because in my mind, Lit Fic requires substantially less plot than I have in mind this year. Of course, knowing me, this will end up a lie at some level. =) So if you'd like some help from me, feel free to PM at any time! ----------

Darn, I replied to this, but it must have been swallowed up with the server crash.
Two time winner with science fiction dramas, but this year I'm doing what I suppose can only be called lit fic, so here I am. The story is contemporary and has no unicorns, or spies, or big lizards, or anything genre-fitting. At least so far! There's still nearly a month of planning to go after all, who knows what madness might happen?

I'm also here in litfic! All of my writing that tries to be non-literary always somehow becomes at least a hybrid of lit fic, for whatever reason :)
But this time around I'm definitely committed to this genre.

Lit fic all the way :) This is my...third? Fourth? I'm not really sure, because I've done Nano without signing up before. Anyway, I guess I'm sort of an oldie, or at least intermediate :P And every other year I've written something which I suppose could be called "literary". So why stop now?
I'm really looking forward to it this year - although that might have something to do with the new laptop. Also looking forward to getting to know everyone around the forums!

Okay, so you're all litfic, maybe you can help me here ;) I usually *read* litfic and thoroughly enjoy it, especially the postmodern kind that mingles it all so nicely with other genre conventions. However, I have no clue how to put together my *own* litfic. So I was wondering how you guys go at it? How do you set up a plot? Does the plot even matter or do you start out with characters?
My problem is usually that I'm great at making up characters, but if I'm stuck with merely characters, I block completely. I need some kind of plot, but when I start making up plots, I always end up with these weird semi-urban-fantasy-like stories. And yet I have the feeling I should be writing something different than my usual stories. So. Any help? Or do you just simply end up with lit.fic?

Having characters more important than the plot is a good start.
I mean, the plot could be something as simple as "A and B watch a car wreck on the way to the market" in order to give them a launching point into whatever issues it is they have to talk about.
But I find what differentiates Lit Fic more starkly than most other "genres" is the focus on issues and introspection. It's like we walk around with a "LIFE: SERIOUS BUSINESS" sign on our heads. As such, you could write something set in your urban fantasy and still end up with Lit Fic undercurrents driving your narrative.

I agree, the plot doesn't really matter that much. You don't have to completely avoid having a story. You just need to make sure your characters are at least as important if not more than the main plot.
It can be hard juggling the focus between story and characters, but it's definitely do-able, and that means you won't lose interest either. Just go with whatever feels right, and try to constantly keep your characters in evolution: every one of their actions has a reason behind it. They're always thinking and changing and you need to pay attention. But it's nothing to worry about, and writing is supposed to be fun - there aren't really any rules that you have to follow when writing a particular genre. Good luck! What are you thinking so far?

Check out the "You know you're writing lit fic when...." board and you'll realize you're not alone. It's not about the plot, but about what the characters learn as they go along. I think I have way more plot than I need, or else I'm going to end up with 250,000 words before I know it! Once I start writing about the character and dialogue and internal thoughts, the plot slows WAY down....
