Hello everyone! I made up the first thread like this in last year's 'Life after nanowrimo' forum, and it was more successful than I ever antipicated! So....I made another one for this year! :D

I'll start. I skimmed through this book when my uncle brought it over to my grandparents' house once. I promptly forgot the title, and when I asked my uncle about it later, he didn't even remember the book, so here I am! The book was definitely about treasure ships from all over the world and from many time eras. It was a large hardcover, coffee table book. It had many maps of where the treasure ships were located and each ship was marked with an exploding ship. It had beautiful artwork, all in full color.

I was able to find most of the books I submitted to the last thread except this one...it was a Little Red Riding Hood story adapted to the bayous in the deep south. Red was a little black girl who had to go to her aunt's or grandmother's house several times and had to outsmart a crocodile or alligator, along the way. the art work was gorgeous, and is mostly the reason why I want this book! Someone did point me towards a Deep South version of LRRH, but the artwork was awful and definitely not what I remembered at all.

I think this would be more suited for the All Ages Coffeehouse forum.

There was this one book, I remember the title, I think... it was called "The Forsayte Saga" or something like that. I read the first two paragraphs of the book, it's an older book, I know that much. I saw it in an antique mall not for sale >.< but it seemed really interesting, but I have no idea who wrote it

Thanks, Dragonchilde, sorry for sticking this thread in the wrong place to begin with! :)

When I was very young (like... somewhere between 5 and 10, so this was in the late 80s, early 90s), I had a small pink book that wasn't very long. On the cover, there was a picture of fairies. Inside, if I remember correctly, were short fairy stories on one side of the page and paintings/elaborate scenes of fairies on the other side.

For the life of me, I can't remember what this was called, nor who wrote it. I loved it back then, but my Google searches for the title and cover have turned up short.

When I was in middle school, I was head over heels with, in my opinion, a classic story- The Outsiders. I had my own copy before everybody else in my 8th Grade Class did, and it was the first book I had ever read more than once. (I rarely do that, even now.) Two years later, and I still identify it as one as my favorites. However, it saddens me to say I lost my copy. If I had a job or any other source of income, I would go out and buy myself a new copy- I'd love to read it again. However, not only do I not have any money what-so-ever, I also have the strange feeling it's around here somewhere. I only hope my beloved book comes back to me one day.

Destroyer of Worlds,

Is the Little Red book you're looking for maybe "Petite Rouge?' That's a Cajun retelling of the classic story...

If you had asked a week ago, the answer would have been "The Man Who Counted" by Malba Tahan. But I just found it in some old boxes of stuff! Happy~

There's a ton more books from my childhood I loved, I hope my dad hasn't given them away...

I have a vague memory of a book I used to love as a child but can't remember anything about it really so I really can't remember the title or author. What I do remember is the book had a blue themed cover. It was also about a teddy bear who has to go looking for something. I think, if I remember right which I probably don't, it was some part of his clothing. He travels through town in the book looking for the missing object. If anyone knows what I'm talking about I will hug you lol. I remember reading that book over and over when I was little but haven't seen the book since I was probably around four years old. If it helps it was published sometime before 1991.

starblack,

I do believe the book you're looking for is Corduroy. Loved that book. He was looking for a lost button. (I have no idea how I remember all that!)

Man, I have a lot of these. I'll ask about one that's been bugging me recently. There's this book I remember from grade school. It was about this boy who comes from another world and ends up in ours. This family finds him and takes him in. The boy does not eat meat, and none of his clothes are made from animals. I remember the father of the family noting that even his boots are made from, like, tough vegetable fibers. And the people in that world don't lie, either. Another scene I remember is the boy asking why the mother of the family told white lies, like saying she liked another woman's hat when it was ugly, and the boy said in his world people would say what they thought so that, like, the hat could be made more beautiful. And maybe he had powers. I'm kinda vague there. But I do know that in the end the villagers got mad at the family for sheltering the boy, and they escaped back with the boy to his own world after figuring out how to open a gateway there. If anyone can figure out which book this is, I will love them forever.

jennbook, no, it isn't "Petit Rouge"...my book had a little black girl who had all these cute dresses and went around barefooted.

dracobolt, I had to rack my brain for your book, because I read the same one....but fortunately I just remembered it! It is "Forgotten Door" by Alexander Key. You can find it here http://www.amazon.com/Forgotten-Door-Apple-Paperbacks/dp/0590431307/ref=...

As for the girl with the pink fairy book...sorry....doesn't ring a bell. Maybe someone else will know?

Yes, that's exactly it! Thank you! Now I just need to add it to my list of books to check out of the library. ^_^

I had a book I loved so much. It was a paperback my oma bought me about Alice in Wonderland only it wasn't alice in wonderland. It was a collection of short stories written by a whole heap of different authors. It was focused on teh characters and it was sort of what they were doing if they weren't in the Alice In Wonderland books.

There was one where the little pig that was dressed like a baby ran away and never seemed to age. He went to college and got a degree and was very clever and he lived until pretty much the end of time + he met a little girl named Alice right at the very end. It was cute.

There was another one about a girl who inherited her grandmother's cat. It was the Cheshire cat.

Another one, I think it was about tweedle Dum + dee and a man was falling through the sky talking to them. These are only my partial memories of the stories, so they must sound quite absurd!

Oh there was one with the March Hare and some other character and the doormouse driving a convertible across a desolate highway and they picked up a hitchhiker, alice, and then held up a diner? I fell in love with the March Hare in that story..

OH and my favourite story was about this woman who owned a boarding house and she was quite strange, i think she was the queen of hearts? Anyway one of her boarders peeked through the keyhole in her room one day and saw her 'fiddling' with her pet spider? Ugh it was so weird and obscene but I loved it!

It had a white cover. My dog chewed the front cover but I think it had a painting on the front.

I'd dearly love to know what it's called. It was my favourite book.

Thank you that is actually exactly what I was thinking about. ^_^ Thanks so much. Although now I'm wondering why I remembered the cover as being blue. *wanders off slightly confused*

There was this one book I loved as a child, and for the life of me I cannot remember the title.

It was about an upscale/wealthy mouse, who tried to catch his wife’s scarf when some wind blew up and he ended up getting lost in the woods. He had to survive on his own and ended up living in a tree trunk, or something like that. He was gone from his wife for a long time, but finally they were reunited and he returned her scarf…he was in rags pretty much when he got home, and I remember when he put on his regular clothes, they weren’t as comfortable as what he had grown used to.

Okay I read a book a long, long time ago...it was about a boy who went to be a page. His parents were both killed by an evil knight. I don't remember a whole story, but I do remember him climbing over a wall because they lost something in what turned out to be a garden where two ladies were. Then there was this room in a high tower I think. Any help would be much appreciated :D

Hmm, I'm not sure if its the right book, but maybe it's this one, "The Door in the Wall" by Marguerite Angeli. The MC is a son of a knight and his mother is alive but away, and the boy falls ill and ends up crippled because of it. Is this remotely like your memory of your book? http://www.amazon.com/Door-Wall-Marguerite-Angeli/dp/0440402832

No, that one's not it. I think there was a dark knight or something...ack! I have mental pictures from when I read it but that's not exactly helpful.

The upscale mouse book is Abel's Island by William Steig. Haven't thought of that in years, but I loved it when I was young too!

Years ago, I read a short story that I can't remember the name of, and really, I can't remember much of the plot either. I just remember the twist at the end. Throughout the story, you were meant to assume that the characters were human, but at the end they turn out to be wolves, and I think they may have been hunted by humans or something.

I know it's not much to go on, but if anyone can manage to figure out the name of this short story and/or who wrote it, I'd really appreciate it! I'd like to read it again.

There's a book I read in elementary school (about 1999 or so) that I can't find ... It was pretty old and tattered then, probably been in the library for around ten years already, so the publication date would likely be in the 80's or before that.

Four kids (one boy who's a bully, one girl who's the bully's cousin, one boy who's a regular victim of the bully, and one girl who's the victim's sister - I'm sure about the boys, not so sure about the girls) get lost in a set of caves with minimal food and must somehow work together to find their way out. Other than that really vague idea of the plot, i remember one scene where the victim boy was one his hands and knees crying about something or looking on the ground for something. And the bully was really annoyed so he picked up his foot to kick the victim boy in the head. The bully's cousin was horrified when she saw this, cuz she knew that the bully had done such a thing before - he had no compunctions about it - and the result hadn't been pretty. But then the bully put his foot back down without kicking the victim boy and ... I don't remember.

And I seem to remember that the title had the word 'fear' in it, and I'm sure the author's last name begins with "L" - I seriously thought for a while that this book was part of Madeleine L'Engle's Wrinkle in Time series because this book was right next to A Wrinkle in Time and had the same kind of coveer.

I remember being read a book when I was about 7, about a little troll who had some sort of ring around his tummy, and there was a mountain. That's all I can remember!

Hurley, I know yours!

The Farthest-Away Mountain by Lynne Reid Banks

The main character is a girl called Dakin, who wakes up one morning to find the farthest-away mountain calling to her. She packs a lunch and sets out before the rest of the family wakes up, and one of the items she takes is a little brass troll. She has quite a few adventures, including meeting a giant frog and three gargoyle brothers, before finally saving the mountain from the evil being that's taken it over. Ring a bell? The brass troll comes to life when she cries on him.

Anyway, the ring part comes pretty near the end, but it's definitely the same little brass troll in this book.

Just the topic I'm looking for - maybe someone will be able to help.

Ok, there's a world of dreams and a world of nightmares, all linked by paths - when you fall asleep you walk the paths and find your perfect dream, or if you get lost the worst nightmare. There are wizards (?) who create their own worlds along the paths, and this follows the story of one who built his little slice of paradise at the end of the road so no one would have to go through it.

He used to work for the king of the dream world, but left to create his own world, but the king of nightmares is trying to invade... Ack I just can't seem to describe it very well XD

I do remember his paradise is.. well quite literally a lush green paradise with cute creatures and what not, and there is a world where you can fly. Oh! And there's a void that if you step off of the path you cease to exist, but its the void that the wizards create their worlds from...

And there's something about the wizard only being there because in the real world (our world) he's in a coma.

Does it ring any bells with anyone? I loved this book and I can't for the life of me remember its name.

A very happy edit!
I started searching google for it again and just as I clicked post I found the book! It is called "Mirror Dreams" and is by Catherine Webb. Huzzah!

I wish I'd known about this thread last year. Oh well. Fortunately, I believe I'm not looking for any books at the moment, but last year I was having difficulty obtaining the book "Flying Solo" by Ralph Fletcher. I was sure about the title, but everyone kept pointing me to the Roald Dahl book "Going Solo" (everyone as in my family and friends, who were convinced I just got the title wrong, but I did remember the story). Anyway, I want to suggest "Flying Solo" as a great children's book (and a pretty good read for teens and adults).

I don't think I recognize any of the books anyone needs help finding. Sorry. My suggestion is that you ask people at big bookstores (B&N, Borders) if they've heard of the story. I believe that's how my mom found the book she was looking for some time ago. Also, brute force searches apparently work all right.

I really can't remember the name of this book or the author... this is what it's about.

it's about a cat that can time travel and can talk and takes the MC into past Egypt where cats are worshiped. I really don't remember much else other than that.

Thank you so much to anyone that can tell me the title and author!
