So, whatcha writing this year?

Inquiring minds want to know... what story are you writing this year? Do you have your plot figured out?

Or are you still trying to decide?

I'm working on my family fantasy story idea that I had tried before. Going to try and not bog myself down this time with worries and second-guessing. Just write.

ML appreciation day \o/

As it is ML appreciation day, I thought it would be nice for us all to write little thank yous in the forums. I hope that everyone can stop by to share a little thanks to our wonderful ML's.

Personally, I want to send a great thank you to all the Tucson MLs of this year and last. You are the people that make this locally possible, and we appreciate every bit of your hard work. You inspire us all, or at least me, to someday strive to help right along with you.
Of course, you guys also have the canny ability of making madness look like the best thing in the world. So here's a giant thank you to all of you <3

now to a more recent note, thank you ThorinLight for organizing all the get togethers and write offs >u<~
You made both the party, and the midnight dash quite memorable. I wish you luck in your adventures in NaNoLand ~

thank you, and sincerely
Introductions anyone? :D

Hey everyone. Since I doubt anyone knows me, my name is Paul. I'm a 16 year old junior at Catalina Foothills High School and I did manage to complete NaNoWriMo last year with my novel Split Soul. Unfortunately, I never edited it, and I never got the paperback copy from CreateSpace either because I couldn't figure out how to get the page formatting fixed before the deadline.

Anyways. I made a promise last year to get to know my fellow NaNo writers better, and this thread should help new comers get to know others as well. So maybe say your name, age, whether or not you've done NaNo before and if you've completed it, and your hopes for the upcoming NaNoWriMo

So what is everybody going to name their MC? I always find it one of the most difficult choices to make, along with the title. hehe. I have no idea atm, but I figured it'd be cool to hear what everyone else has thought of.... :)
Write-Ins at the U of A?

Okay, so if any of you are students without cars like me (and my bff Krissy), you'll have already experienced the utter disappointment that was missing the kick-off parties. Yes?

So, would any students on campus be willing and interested to do a write-in sometime later this week or something? I'd love to meet everyone, and that way we don't have to feel left out for all the write-ins happening off campus.

I'm pantsing and panicking! Going to forge through, though. I'm not sure I like my MC. Never had that happen before. Guess she'll evolve the way she wants to. lol

About 1,700 words, so it's really too early to tell, right? I'm chugging out about 500 words/hour. Have to finish by Nov. 20, because family is coming for Thanksgiving.

Parents, where are you writing?

I was wondering how other parents where finding time to write.

Down here in Sierra Vista, I try and get my thinking and research done in bits and pieces during the day and then soon as DH gets home between 5-6 we take the kids to a local park depending on how much light we have left. Only one park is lit at night that we have found. Weekends, we try and find new parks. Last Sunday we found Jacobs Park in Tucson and the kids had a blast.

Why the parks every day in November? Because I have found I do not write like I should at home. Everything gets in the way. Having dedicated time to write, where I can watch my children and husband playing really helps. That way as long as I am not blocked I can get my daily writing done in about an hour.

So parents, what is working for you so far? Tips? Great places to take the kids so you can write?

----------

Writing Materials

How do you guys write? Desk top? Laptop? Voice recognition? Standard keyboard? Ergonomic? Pen/cil and paper? (And does anybody else's laptop or anything have a name?

I prefer to use my desk top, with its ergonomic keyboard but have been known (when camping, for instance) to write long hand (with a pen). This is bothersome because it can be windy outside, lonely inside, and then I have to retype it all anyway.

Now I've got a used AlphaSmart 2000, for which I believe I'm about to score the PS2 cable for $7 (as distinct from the $70 that AlphaSmart would charge me, + s&h). Once I know I can transfer what I write to my computer, I can take my AS2K to the woods and open myself to inspiration.

Conditionally, therefore, yay! If the PS2 cable at SWS Electronics out on Speedway isn't what I need, I still have time to order the expensive cable and get it before our next scheduled camping trip, but I'm really hoping the $7 one works. Either way, it'll cost considerably less than a new Neo, and be just as serviceable.

(My desktop is "the computer" or "my real computer," or "the stupid computer." My laptop's name is Lucy, and I've named my AS2000 Luddie, short for Ludd/ite.)
Tucson writing venues

My favorite writing location, a deserted little coffee house on Campbell (Cafe Diva) went under this year; I guess it was a little too deserted. I tend to write really well, or at least really fast, when I'm in public places. I've got a couple of picnic tables at parks that I frequent, but other than that, I'm drawing a blank on places that'll let me get a beverage and take advantage of their table space for hours.

So... where do you like to write? Any good recommendations?
NaNo babies / November birthdays

This thread is for those of us whose birthdays might otherwise be engulfed in the torrent of words sweeping around us all through the month of November--but really, what better way to celebrate?

If the site keeps running smoothly (so far, this year, I'm impressed!) I'll even edit this first post and keep a list.

My birthday is November 7, and I'll be 25 this year.
Pantser or Plotter

Which kind of a writer are you? I'm curious to know how many of us have everything that all figured out and who makes it up as they go along. Me? I'm usually a Seat of the Pantser. This year, I'm actually going to plot a little and see how far that gets me. I might even get to have an ending this year! Imagine that.
odd but interesting info

I had to do some incidental research about trees for one part of my novel, and after finding some sites that were pretty much light gardening and others that were heavily academic, I came across this one, which was solid goldilocks -- just right! If you need to know stuff about trees, this is a good starting place. And it's just kind of interesting to browse anyway.

Tucson Weekly doing a story on NaNoWriMo!!!

A writer from the Tucson Weekly will be doing a short piece about National Novel Writing Month for the Book Feature section of the November 19th issue!!!

She *might* show at the Black Rose tonight but it's not very certain. I guess I'm her go-between.

She says, "It won't be a terribly long article---775 words for the books section---so I'll probably only need to talk to one or two other people besides you. Maybe you can help me pick the most interesting people."

SO! Do you consider yourself "interesting"??? OF COURSE YOU DO! You're doing NaNoWriMo, aren't you? There you go!

Anyway, if you are dying to talk to the writer, (keeping in mind that your half-hour interview with her will get reduced to one phrase from one of your sentences, in all likelihood), let me know. Thanks.

My name is Margrit.

Hello all.

I am hoping to find one or two other people participating in this crazy adventure down here in the Sierra Vista area. If you're here, in Bisbee, Tombstone, Douglas, etc and want to get together some time this month for a write-in, respond here and we'll work it out.

Sunday 11/1 write-in anyone?

I didn't see one on the schedule (other than the midnight madness at IHOP). Was thinking afternoon-ish, Black Rose Caffe or Coffee Exchange. (Apparently I was sick from whatever crap was in the heater/AC in my classroom. They cleaned out the filter and I feel fine!)

Let me know if there's any interest in a write-in this Sunday!

Hey! So I've been seeing all of these really cool things for get togethers and write ins for Tucson! Woo!
However, I live on campus, and I'm slightly limited on how far I travel considering how I have no vehicle. Would anyone else be up to meeting on campus? :D

So, to start 09 right, we need to have a kick off party! I'd like to open up a discussion on possible locations you all would like to go and when! My gut reaction would be to say Oct. 24 at Black Rose @ 7 because they love us. Does that work? Please list any yay's or nay's below and get the ball rolling! :D WHEE!

Any of you use Chris Baty's book? I read it before my first NaNo, but not since (that I remember). I'm thinking of either reading it all now to get even more hyped up and ready, or reading the beginning now and the weekly chapters during their alloted time. Anyone else?
Novelists reading @ Antigone Books Friday, Oct. 23rd, at 7 p.m.

Hey, everyone, there is a group reading at Antigone Books on Friday, Oct. 23rd, starting at 7 p.m. to benefit Owl & Panther (20% of sales will go to the nonprofit). O & P helps those affected by trauma through creative writing and counseling. O & P especially seeks to treat trauma associated with torture, dislocation, refugee status, or family problems.

The five authors--Robin Brande, Juanita Havill, Marge Pellegrino, Janni Lee Simner, and Jennifer J. Stewart--write for children and young adults (teens). We are happy to answer questions about the writing process.

Robin Brande will read from Fat Cat (Knopf, $16.99), a funny, thoughtful novel that explores how girls feel about their bodies, and the ways they can take care of their most precious resource: themselves.

Juanita Havill will read from Grow: A Novel in Verse (Peachtree, $14.95). This novel, written from the perspective of 12-year old Kate, shows how an inner-city community garden brings neighbors together.

Marge Pellegrino will read from Journey of Dreams (F. Lincoln, $15.95). A modern-day Underground Railroad during conflict in Guatemala forms the center of this wonderful and stirring novel told from the viewpoint of a 13-year-old Mayan girl.

Janni Lee Simner will read from her novel, Bones of Faerie (Random House, $16.99). The war between humanity and Faerie has devastated both sides. When 15-year-old Liza discovers she has the Faerie ability to see into the past and future, she finds what may be the key to healing both worlds.

Jennifer J. Stewart will read from her novel, Close Encounters of a Third-World Kind (Holiday House, $6.95). When 12-year old Annie's father announces that the family will be spending the next two months in Nepal on a medical mission, Annie’s not so sure about this adventure. But when she meets Nirmala, a girl close to her own age, the real adventure begins.

This event is supported by Poets & Writers, Inc.

The reading will be followed by a question and answer period.

Refreshments will be served.
