Okay, we will be at the DOWNTOWN branch of the Nashville Public Library from 2-5 (Also known as opening to closing).

The library is located on Church street between sixth and seventh.

A note about parking: You can park in the garage attatched to the library for a fee - there is a $4 maximum on weekend days. Also, all downtown on street metered parking is free on Sunday. You can also park at the State Capital/Library Archives for free and walk a couple (fairly short) blocks straight down 7th ave. In case anyone cares, that's where I usually park.

Also, even though there's a cafe at the library, it's closed at the weekends. Sorry.

To find us, go up to the 3rd floor, and off the steps, turn left. There are tables by the magazines that are wired for laptop power, so it's a great spot to meet. This is the periodicals section... As in, we'll be surrounded by magazines.

Announcing the Evening of Scribbling Recklessly! This is our answer to the Night of Living Dangerously, since I know most people here in Nashville can't go to California this year.

What: A six hour long, prize filled, crazy write a thon!
Where: Still working on details. I'll tell you more later!
When: Sunday, 22 November 4-10 PM

Admission:
Okay, guys. This is a big fundraiser event for NaNo. So, there's going to be a little bit of an admission fee.
It's a $5 donation to get in the door - cash or a check payable to NaNoWriMo will be accepted.

Also, because of our limited (read that as non-existant) budget, I'm asking that everybody bring a finger food-ey side dish to share. Remember, we'll be stuck there for six hours, so I'd hate to have you waste away to nothing.

With that all said, here's some other stuff.
Right now, my goal for us is a final word count of 50,000 words for the day.
Just to put in perspective how easy this goal is, if you can write the daily word count in under 2 hrs, that means each person can write about 5,000 words in 6 hours.. We'd only need 10 writers to make that goal. We can so do this!

So I was driving today, like I always seem to be (I swear I should stop paying rent and live in my car), and I was thinking about my project when what my old creative writing teacher used to say popped into my head. His sound and solid advice was "Write what you know". So what's the best writing advice you've gotten, from teachers, friends, fellow writers, tv, the back of a cereal box, where ever?

THE PARTHENON has graciously allowed us space.

There are a few rules associated with this.
1. NO FOOD, NO DRINKS, (and yes, water is a drink), NO CANDY OR GUM
2. NO BACKPACKS ETC. So laptop and that's it.

Those who want to join the write in need to be there by 9:15 so that you can be admitted with the group - they have asked that we all go in together.

Anyone who comes seriously late: I will make no guarantee that you can get your admission waved. If you don't come in with me, be prepared to pay $6/adult or $3.50/student. In fact, I am telling them that anyone that gets there after 10 (unless you clear this with me first) has to pay.

For those interested. I am a Docent there (which is probably the only reason I got to do a write in there, and also why I can get you in without paying), so if you're interested in a tour of the building, I will do a tour after the write in (So sometime around 12-12:30). If you would like to come just for the tour, you may, but please remember that you will pay admission if you chose this route.

With that said, who's in?

After plugging 6,433 words into the sci-fi story I intended to write this month, I was hit with the news of two close friends' divorce. Though it didn't effect my story at all, it inspired me to try something else entirely. So I'm devoting my efforts into 50,000 words of a bloggish/memoirish/love letter to my wife.

This one's going much easier. Write what you know, indeed. 7,350 over two days, and counting. 'Sides, I can get back to Outposted another time. After November.

Reminds me of the big band song, "I Could Write a Book." Oh yeah? So do it. I am.

As an added bonus if I can pull this off, guess who just saved money on his Christmas shopping?

The electricity went off in Franklin today and yep! you guessed it. I had been writing for a while and hadn't saved. Fortunately most everything else was recovered but about 20 minutes of writing. Shifty Voice

I am over the top tired. I went back to read some of the stuff I had been writing and noticed that I had shifted from the characters voice to my own. I was writing "I did this and I did that".
I think someone else said they were changing voices too. It was so weird. Suddenly somewhere along the way I had become my lead character. Who else is losing their mind??

Meagre Worker Bee Shout Out Thread

I just want to have a little joy place here for people to pat themselves on the back for at least doing something--no matter how small--on their book every day.

Because as long as I've been a writer my worst problem (other than some really bad writing...) has always been showing up and just doing it. That's why I'm here, to enforce discipline and completion.

So, yay me for actually getting something done three days in a row. (I forgot to start on Sunday....see what I mean?) ;)

Anybody else out there feeling kinda good about sticking with it so far?

So, I haven't been writing that much. But last night I got up after half an hour of sleep and pulled out the pad and paper and hit my stride. Changed viewpoint characters, changed voice--radically, and just chugged right along. Decided to move to the computer and transcribed, adding more and more as I went. Then suddenly out of nowhere, while the character is in the attic above his shop, removing books from crates and being a good-natured soul, the words "Haunted Bookshop" flash before my eyes. Yup, my radically changed voice was Christopher Morley, whom I haven't read for twenty years.

Why is my story being difficult?

It is only day 3 and already my story is being uncooperative. There is so much more that I want from it, but so far it is feeling so bare bones that it is ridiculous. I like writing stories that gets the reader so wrapped up that time passes without them knowing it. But I have to say that what I'm writing right now reads more like textbook than anything else. It is missing all the descriptive sparkle that I like to do.

I keep telling myself that I will go back and add that in once I get some of the main ideas out of my head, but it still frustrates me to know that I have left something so "undone" and I haven't gone back to fix it.

And on top of that, some of the mechanics in my story aren't exactly working out. Day 3 and I'm already finding plot holes. I'm freaking out, because this didn't happen last year. Last year the story just happened. I would sit down and type and there it was. Now I type and I'm not really happy with what ends up on the screen.

This has me worried, because it is only day 3. There is 27 more to go.

Howdy to all, my name is Will, and for whose who didn't meet me on Monday the 26th, I am a loudmouth. But all that changes is three days, because I'll be writing everything instead of speaking! I'm writing this quick email to say howdy, which I've already done, and to ask if there are any people in the Nashville Airport area who would be interested in hanging and writing together? With the economy where it is, I may not be able to make it to all the various events, but if there are people close to me, maybe we can carpool, and/or figure out other ways to keep movitate throughout the month of November. This is my first year of NaNo, and well I'm a little scared, I'm more excited . . .but I could definitely use some cheerleaders or, at least, some neighbors.
