Synopsis: Nightingale
Cerisse finds her elderly bridegroom dead on their wedding night, but not from natural causes. Is she next?
Excerpt: Nightingale
Bertol rushed from his office, already driven by a head full of steam. His cheeks were flushed, his breath came in short pants and he walked in a hurried, jerky manner. “Mrs. Alsogaray, it is so wonderful to see you of course, but I really wish you had warned me ahead of time as it is rather inconvenient to provide you with a tour at this time.” He took out a handkerchief and mopped his damp forehead and mustache.
Taken aback by his brusque demeanor, Cerisse said, “That is quite all right Mr. Alsogaray. And you may call me Cerisse as we are family now. I quite understand that this is a place of business, but I am ready to dive in and learn the business if you would be so kind as to guide me.”
“Unfortunately, madame, I am too busy running the business to act as your teacher.” He turned to a boy running by. “Go get Ruisko.” Turning back to Cerisse he gave her a long look, but shook it off, as though he had considered saying something but thought the better of it. Mopping his forehead again, he said, “Mr. Ruisko will give you a tour. I’m afraid I am unable to join you due to my responsibilities.”
Setting her jaw, Cerisse answered. “I fully understand that the weight of your responsibility is great. I’m sure it will be a relief to have a comrade share the burden with you. When I am finished with the tour, I shall join you in the office to discuss how I may help you.”
