Excerpt: The Diversions
She walked up the stairs and noticed noise coming from her apartment. Deep breaths, Zuri, deep breaths. Zuri hoped that Mason's artist buddies weren't inside. She really didn't think that she could handle that right now. She tried her best to not get angry before opening the door. She was too exhausted to expend all that effort. She went to pull out her keys, but noticed the door was slightly ajar. Not a good sign.
She walked in and saw that her living room was deserted. She exhaled. There wasn't any other noise besides the music, so that was also quite encouraging. She turned the radio down.
"Mason? Where are you?"
She checked in the kitchen and noticed an empty bottle of vodka on the table.
"Wonderful."
She looked in the bathroom since Mason had the amazing talent of passing out on the bathroom floor. He wasn't there either.
He must already be asleep. Zuri secretly hoped that he had passed out in the recliner in the bedroom rather than being spralled out on the bed. Mason was always impossible to move once he was already asleep.
She opened the bedroom door and rolled her eyes. Sure enough, he was passed out on the bed. She started to turned around, but stopped herself. Mason was holding another bottle of vodka in his hand. Zuri started to panic. She rushed up to him and tried to wake him.
"Mason. Mason. Mason, wake up."
She tried to shake him.
"Mason. Mason? Mason, come on."
She shook him more violently, but he wasn't budging.
"Mason?? Mason! Mason, wake up!! Mason!"
She panicked and started to cry. She ran over to her cell phone and dialed 911.
