Excerpt: Love and Living
From where I stand, I can see him. His head is bent over his book. He looks very studious and serene. I don’t want to go over to him, to disturb him. He looks right just as he is. He does not need me.
Should I go? There is nothing more I want to do now than to go over, take his hands in mine and kiss them. I want to look up into his face and say, “Yes, yes, yes. Yes a thousand times over and more.” There won’t be enough words for me to express the feelings that are threatening to burst out of my chest.
But that is not why I am here. I am not here to tell him that. I am here to tell him something that will break his heart and break mine even more.
