Synopsis: Poor Devils
Life sucks, and then on a routine job, you find a terrified teenager in the back of the van.
Turns out everyone is connected--by your damn older brother.
You haven't seen him in years. You don't want to. He got you involved in this.
He's even managed to screw this girl over. You know she's just a teenager, and she was just a child then. But there's something about her, there's something in that body that makes you want...
There's something in that body that's waking you up, as if you've been dead for the last ten years.
Excerpt: Poor Devils
“Why did you kill that man?” she asked, subdued, rubbing her other arm.
Remy didn’t look back or say anything.
“I just — want to know,” she added quietly. “Just because there had to be a reason or something — didn’t there?—did you put him out of his pain or—?”
“Sometimes people just do shit!” he interrupted, stopping and turning around, making her recoil from the anger, staring at the ground. “I don’t know where you come from, but shit doesn’t always have some grand design. Shut the fuck up, and leave it alone!”
And that was the end of that. There was no question of continuing what had been a poor excuse for conversation, and they drifted into awkward silence. Remy was ignoring shame at losing his temper so quickly. Briony was shivering every so often, the cold washing over her, and wishing desperately to be home.
It was odd how quickly she’d forgotten how upset she was while she was at home.
