Synopsis: Was

Edinburgh, January 1659. In the wake of the Civil Wars, Aristeles is looking for a man with the power to repel and destroy. He plans on offering him immortality in exchange for his help. Dreams of glory, a wish for living, hopes for a better world: the road to Hell is definitely paved with the best of intentions.

Warsaw, September 1939. As the German troops march into the city, Rabbi Steiner weaves faith and magic to create a Golem that will protect his people. However, fire and death claim the wise man as their own that night, leaving his creature roaming free. Feeling that this is the chance of his life, young mage Ludwig Czieslowski invokes a True Name to bind the raging Golem. Yet what is the price of giving a name to that which was never meant to have one?

Paris, February 1989. On a cold winter night, on the Austerlitz Bridge, Moira is fighting a woman the likes of which she has never seen, and for the first time in her life, she is aware that she is going to die. Falling into the dark and murky waters of the Seine river, her last thought is that nobody will remember her. And her heart screams in despair.

Bristol, May 2008. A-level student Louisa Keynes wakes up in a white hospital room, after a car crash left her in a coma for ten months, only to find out that something else has changed. Her nights plagued by weird dreams, a strange power burning in her, her e-mail account filled with mysterious messages telling her to go to London, she finally drops her original project of applying to Oxford and, against her family's wishes, aims for London College instead. Lou wants to learn the truth; until then, she just cannot give it a rest.

London, December 2009. In a dark Aldgate alley, sys-op Echoes and blood sorceress Ring discover a corpse whose death was all but natural. At St Pancras, Marek Van Cartier is about to wreak havoc, a sweet smile on his lips. Standing on the platform at Tottenham Court Road tube station, Lyle Karlowitz is staring at a heartless woman, feeling the urge to kill again. And Louisa Keynes is riding the Circle Line, wondering how just a few months were enough to reduce her family to shambles.

A new year is nearing. What was and what is shall now meet.

She sent her answer, then immediately threw the phone in her bag with no intention of picking up again. Curiosity was getting the best of her, though, and she could not prevent herself from peering at the platform from the corner of an eye, trying to spot the guys there amidst the crowd. But she did not see anyone she knew, and when the train departed for its next stop, Lou shrugged a shoulder. It was just as well. May they freeze in the cold outside the station, or wherever they were at the moment.

Then a thought hit her. Her friends or that David fellow could not have been waiting for her there. The Northern line was the most direct one she could take to go from Karen's to Passfield Hall, and she was sure that neither of the guys had been there with her, least stepped into the same train. It was technically impossible that they had been trying to set a joke on her in Tottenham. So who on earth had sent that message?

A new buzz came from her bag. A new text message. All of a sudden, a chilly sensation seized the young woman. In a way, this situation reminded her of that fateful day of July 2008, when she had started receiving the first of those weird e-mails on her internetless laptop. Yes... Come to think of it, this was oddly similar. Not some bad joke. Not some stupid friend of a friend trying to hit on her. Not even some pervert chap having laid his hands on her number.

Ignoring the man in front of her, ignoring the disdainful twist of his lips, she took her phone to check on her messages. Unsurprisingly, there it was, the new one, from the same unknown number. However, this time, its content was different.

GET DOWN. NOW.

Prompted by a gut feeling, Lou did not think twice. She obeyed.

A second later, magic whirled into the car and chaos erupted all around her.
