We're always looking for help with a host of Office of Letters and Light projects! Our current needs include:
1. Part-time Tech Manager: We're looking for a Technical Manager who can get up to speed on our current code base and infrastructure, and then help us scale and improve our events so that we can continue to provide life-changing experiences to a constantly increasing group of novelists and screenwriters.
The Tech Manager will oversee all aspects of our technical life, from programming new features for our websites to systems administration for our production servers and office.
The new Tech Manager will work closely with the existing tech lead over the next several months to transition smoothly into the new position.
Primary Responsibilities
- Collaborate with staff to plan and spec new features for the sites.
- Coordinate with current contractors to learn and improve documentation for existing infrastructure and code base.
- Manage a team of contractors and volunteers to develop new features and fix bugs.
- Develop new features and bug fixes.
- Troubleshoot new bugs.
- Troubleshoot performance issues with sites.
- Systems administration of production servers.
- Systems administration of OLL office.
Skills Required
- Experience in a LAMP environment
- Strong PHP programming skills
- Experience programming with a team
- Drupal experience a major plus
- Apache and MySQL optimization experience a plus
- HA infrastructure experience a plus
Requirements, Salary, and Hours
- B.S in a technical field or equivalent experience
- Five or more years systems administration experience
- Two or more years PHP experience
Salary based on skill level. This is a 20 hour/week job that will require the candidate work mostly on-site in the downtown Oakland office during business hours. Days and specific hours worked each week are flexible.

2. Enthusiastic fall interns: The Office of Letters and Light is looking for editorial, communications/media relations, and event planning interns to help us prepare for National Novel Writing Month's tenth anniversary. A lot of things are happening in the fall: We are launching a new website for NaNoWriMo’s Young Writers Program, developing new and improved curriculum for our YWP teachers, and will be working around the clock to make sure this year’s main event is tenth-anniversary awesome.
This is an unpaid internship, but we will compensate our interns with many caffeinated beverages, burritos, and a great experience working at a community-art nonprofit that inspires thousands of kids, teens, and adults to reach their creative potential!
