Today's Guest: Graham Dobson, Graphic Designer

Posted by: Lindsey Grant on 10/06/2008

Q: Graham, you've designed some crazy, wonderful things for NaNoWriMo: viking helmet stickers, a guitar-playing unicorn, and even a winner's trophy filled with coffee! What was the most challenging project that you encountered as our resident designer?
A: It's all been pretty challenging stuff and a lot of fun to do, but
creating some of the simple things are the hardest, like trying to
communicate an idea in a simple and clear way. For example, the
website icons and graphics were a challenge because I was trying to
convey my ideas while fitting into an existing look and feel. Talking
of ideas, I get a lot of these from the giant scrapbook in my head,
metaphorically speaking, which has grown over my years as a Graphic
Designer.
It's something I enjoy doing, taking a brief (which Tavia and Chris
are great at), choosing ideas from 'my scrapbook' and breaking the
brief down, hopefully making graphics that are clear for people to
understand. Maybe technically the trickiest thing I had to do was to
use a photo of Chris and turn it into an extremely valuable taco
voucher.
There's still a few things left to do so maybe there's yet another
interesting challenge just over the page...
