Okay so one of my characters in my novel has just slid on black ice and crashed her car into a tree. She is in the hospital with a serious condition. Not a coma-I need her to talk because she is going to reveal the mystery. But what could be wrong with her-more than just broken bones. I need her to almost face death. I need a diagnosis and I need her to remain in the hospital for a while under recovery. Anyone have any good ideas?

There's plenty of trauma that can occur with a car collision:

Ruptured organs (spleen, kidney, duodenum), collapsed or punctured lung, head trauma, internal bleeding, surgical complications, buildup of fluids in various cavities creating pressure on vital organs, etc. Of these, although serious, are quite recoverable.

Not a doctor, so no specifics. But for generalities, here are a few suggestions:

Severe blood loss would send them to hospital, quick.

Punctured lung. Collasped lung.

Neck trauma.

Severe concussion - I think they keep you for those, and side effects from those can make things interesting when she needs to/tries to get out what she knows.

Blood clot - very dangerous, just need the right circumstance (not even an injury, but injury helps)

Internal injuries to mid-section (from steering wheel, seat belt, whatever). Liver, spleen, stomach, uterus injuries could lead to all sorts of complications - especially if a hemerage develops, or one of them fails.

Really bad head injuries could lead to seizures...

Hope something sparks for you.

Bunches of internal injuries like heart, lung, kidney and /or liver contusion, perforation. Bleeding internally from all that. Infection from wound contamination. Some amazing bone fractures not just the run of the mill broken leg. Body parts compressed (read smashed) by the wreckage. It could get really grisly. Talking might be a problem if she has facial injuries. Diagnosis probably some injury/injuries or other related to MVA motor vehicle accident.

Yeah! Why could I not come up with anything. I am liking the mid-section internal injuries and the hemorrhaging...definitely sparking!

You might want to keep in mind that some of those internal injuries would require immediate surgery, which puts your character out of commission for awhile.

CJHill,

I actually thought of that. I am thinking a ruptured spleen. My MC is actually on the way to the hospital as we speak. I am thinking that by the time she gets there that my other character will have just gone in surgery.

with this type of injury will my character who has been in the accident be able to pass on a simple clue to another family member right before she goes into surgery?
