Yeah, yeah, I know. Trust me. I KNOW.

Despite all of that (which I shall not get into), I am attempting a vampire romance. Where do I put this? In horror? Fantasy? Romance?

Anyone else writing this? What's your approach and what are your influences?

(I'm not anti Twilight; I understand the flaws in the books are great and many but I really don't have anything against it on the whole so feel free to mention it if it's important to you.)

What I called a "vampire romance" has ended up being classed as Urban Fantasy (still no bites on THAT one); and it works for me because the rest of the stories set in the same universe don't deal with as much romance.

Vampire stories seem to get automatically classed as fantasy/horror, though.

My thought is this: if it's a romance, it's a romance, no matter what species the main players are. If your plot revolves heavily around mystical things happening, I'd go with fantasy, but if the main point is the relationship of the characters, romance it is.

There's an increasingly popular subgenre called "paranormal romance" which encompasses the whole "romance involving fantasy creatures" thing quite squarely. Much as you might say "if it involves romance, it's a romance novel", the fact is, genre doesn't work that way. Publishers will not publish something that involves vampires or whatnot as just straight romance. There are conventions for romance novels, and expectations from the readers. If they picked up your novel without realizing it had fantasy elements, they might be upset becaues they were expecting an ordinary romance. On the other hand, there are people who _prefer_ to read about more fantastic romances and would pick up something labeled "paranormal romance" despite not being interested in ordinary romance.

Fantastic creatures and elements just work that way. If your story has things like vampires or werewolves, aliens, dragons, elves, etc in it, it is _not_ going to get stuck into any of the "realistic" genres. You've got fantasy, horror, science fiction, and any of the numerous subgenres.

If it is a vampire story that involves a romance, it is horror (regardless of the dark/light alignment of the vampires)
If it is a romance that involves vampires, it is a paranormal romance (Again, regardless of the evil/good persuasion of your vamps)

Hope that helps
