Excerpt: Sunny Side Up
My chair leaned back as I stretched and rubbed my stomach. I still hadn't taken the time to eat lunch. I don't know why, but I'd get hungry later and later these days. My work for the day was nearly finished, so I decided it would be okay to stop and go on my fourty five minute lunch.
I walked into Melvin's office and I knocked lightly on the door even though it was already open.
"Hey, I'm going to head to lunch. You don't have any more appointments for the day, so is that okay?" I asked.
"Sure, I'll just let the phone ring if it does. I've found several decent-sounding people from these applications. I'll probably call a few of them while you're gone and that's it," Melvin said, a piece of paper in each hand.
"Okay, cool beans, then. I'll be back in about 45 minutes," with that I walked out of the door and grabbed my purse from under my desk.
I pulled my cell phone and had completely forgotten that I'd texted Frigg just before. Two messages from her were waiting for me when I flipped my phone open.
The first one read:
Wait, what? You're going to have to call me and explain
to me all of this.
And then the second one said:
Screw that, I'll meet you at your place of work in ten minutes.
I looked at the time. She should be here by now. And just as I had predicted, as I started to leave the lobby area, Frigg and her gorgeous curls were entering the building.
"Hey honey!" She greeted with her big warm smile.
"Hey Frigg!" I ran to her and gave her a big hug. I didn't get to see her very often these days as her work kept her pretty busy. It was always exciting when I did get to see her, though. I loved her so much.
"Alright, so I assume you're going out to lunch, so let's go get something to eat! Might as well be dinner with as late as you eat, girl," Frigg smiled and looped my right arm up so she could stick her left hand through it.
"Yeah, well, you know me. I'm weird like that. I don't eat until I get hungry. I should really put myself on a schedule, but really, what's the point in that?" I giggled
"Anyway, so this married guy was just blatantly hitting on you in your office? And his wife was sitting right there?" Frigg opened the door for me and we both walked out into the day.
The sun was shining nicely today. It wasn't too bright, nor was it too dim. One of those rare perfect days that we got here in Jenson, Texas. The sidewalks were wide in this city to allow for walking around. It was mainly a college town. I was just glad that it wasn't one of the frou-frou colleges like Copper, half an hour down the highway is.
"Yeah, no really! I don't really know if his wife noticed it at all, but it was obvious that he was hitting on me! And then his wife stomps off to the car after the meeting and he ASKS ME OUT!" I shouted.
"WHAT?!" Frigg shouted astonished.
"Yep. Asked me out," I shook my head as we walked down the sidewalk toward the taco shop with open patio.
"No way, why the hell would he do that? He's married for Christ's sake, I mean, wow," Frigg shook her head and her beautiful dyed brunette hair with blonde highlights seemed to shimmer.
"Who knows, but ugh, I wanted to kick him so bad! Not only that, but he's cute?! Why is the higher power doing this to me? Whoever that higher power may be that is," I huffed.
"Well, kicking your clients in bad, even if they really deserve it. And no one is doing this to you, it's just happening because someone has a sick sense of humor," Frigg said guiding me toward the entrance of the shop. My nose was assaulted with the scent of taco seasoning, freshly made tortillas and fresh salsa. I was alive with the atmosphere of this place.
"I mean, there have been a lot of good looking guys that have come through that office while I've worked there, but none of them have acted like this guy and none of them have actually come across as, you know, attractive to me. I've just recognized them as good-looking men and gone on with my life. Nothing for my heart to twitch at," I explained as we halted in the line.
"Well, whatever you do, you must resist!" Frigg advised.
"Oh, don't worry, I will. Oh yeah, and he gave me his cell phone number, too! Like he expects me to call him or something!" I looked at her disgusted once again.
"Pig," Frigg shook her head.
"Ass," I added.
Frigg stood there staring up at the menu. I tried to, but all I could think about was his goofy grin and how he wouldn't take no for an answer. I wanted to throttle him really bad right now. The scents around me were too good to stay in a bad mood, so I let my eyes actually focus on the menu and what I wanted. I decided on the fresco chicken burrito and taco combo in my head. Frigg was staring off into space so I knew that she had long since picked whatever it was that she was going to eat that day.
I always admired Frigg. She held herself so confidently for a bigger girl. I never considered her plus size, but that's what she was, really. Her figure was beautiful though. She had such a great full-figured hourglass that many people didn't label her as "fat," "overweight," or any other negative word. I admired how she never seemed to think of herself that way either. Then again, that's probably why she'd been my best friend for as long as she had been. When I was down, she knew exactly how to pick me up from it. Sometimes it seemed like the advice I gave her would never match the advice she'd given to me throughout our lives.
"Oh my gosh, this place always makes me want to order about ten times more food than I can actually eat in one sitting!" Frigg announced as the line moved forward some.
"Oh, I know. It's terrible. Sometimes I come in here on my lunch break and I order extra just so I can take home and have for dinner that night. Since I'm lazy most times, and I usually come home to a messy house anyway. I never see a point in cooking when no one else in the house will clean their dishes," my eyes rolled automatically in their sockets.
"You should really talk to them about that. Apparently the polite notes around the house haven't helped," Frigg noted looking at me.
"Yeah, I know I should, but really, they're usually never there when I am, and when they are there they're asleep or bitching about too many other things to get their attention," we moved forward again.
"Well, one of those times that they're bitching, you're just going to have to stop them and let them know that you're not cool with them not washing their own damn dishes. Sure, every now and then you can understand leaving a dish or two in the sink because they're in a hurry to leave, but every day? That's ridiculous," Frigg shook her head again. It was easy to think that she shook her head so much because she loved to feel her own hair move.
"One of these days, I will," I said waiting for the line to move again.
I started to look around absent-mindedly when I had to take a double-take to my left. There they were, Mr. and Mrs. Kilman sitting in a booth against the wall eating in silence. She looked annoying and he looked to be enjoying his food rather well.
"Holy hell!" I exclaimed grabbing a hold of Frigg's jacket.
"What?" She said.
"There they are!" I pointed discreetly in their direction.
"Oh!" Frigg looked over there quickly and then to the floor. Then she looked back at him. "Well, you weren't lying. He really is cute!"
