Synopsis: Only When You Sleep

What if Nightmares were real things? What if they pushed their spindly little fingers into your eyes as you slept and ate your misery as you dreamt?

Mari Malins can see nightmares or at least the things that make them. Gabriel, her mentor and savior has kept her young, aging about a year a decade, since the murder of her grandmother and her sisters. Mari feels her calling is to end the dark dreams, but what happens when a Lord of those dark dreams comes for the people she cares about most? And comes for Mari herself? What secrets has she come back to in King's Cross after a 100 year absence? And why has Gabriel kept her so close and so young for so long?

Excerpt: Only When You Sleep

Mari Malins adjusted the heavy basket in her hands as her grandmother, Evelyn glanced nervously behind them. The woods were shadowy and the light was fading quickly.

“Hurry, Mari.”

Fourteen year old Mari quickened her pace as her grandmother requested. Something was wrong tonight. They weren't alone. Something was following them in the woods.

“Is everything all right, grandma?” Evelyn grabbed the basket from Mari's hands and threw it on the ground. She pulled her along as she started to run.

“Run, Mari. Run for the church. Find Gabriel.” Evelyn pulled out a thick silver hair pick and thrust it into Mari's had. It was long and thin and very sharp on one end.

“Use it if you have to.” She pulled out the other pick and her red hair came tumbling free.

They both started running and as soon as they did Mari heard an all too familiar chittering behind her, a sound she had only once heard as a child. She looked back to see them, swarming across the ground. A countless number of them, she had only seen two of them before. Shadowy, gray, barely here, almost incorporeal, forcing their fingers into the eyes of her cousin as she watched. One foot in the dream world her grandmother had told her when she had asked about them. They were the breeders of nightmares, the makers of the dark dreams. They plunged people into terrible places while they slept and fed off of misery.

Evelyn's dress caught on a tree and she tripped. She pushed Mari away from herself as she fell.

“Run, Mari. Don't wait for me.”

In moments the creatures swarmed Evelyn, pulling her down onto the forest floor. Her grandmother screamed and screamed as she fought. Mari looked back to see a writhing black mass more over her grandmother. Evelyn's pleading eyes, begged her to run, begged her to look away. The tiny claws tipped at Evelyn's face and clothes, fabric shredded, blood started to seep into the soil and then, Mari closed her eyes and turned away to run.

She had watched too long, caught in the shock of watching someone you love die. A few of the nightmares had caught up to her. They grabbed at her legs trying to pull her down as well. She stabbed at them with the silver hair pick. She fell on the ground swatting and stabbing at them as fast as she could. A shadowy alp moved to crush her chest. She thrust the pick through it's head as it reached out and gashed her face, ripped her from eye to jaw.
