Brief Author Bio: A recent graduate taking a year off to recuperate and write before heading off to Japan to teach. If a short story gets sold in that interval (dare to dream!) she won't be unhappy. |

Synopsis: The Dodgeball Conspiracy
In 2004, I wrote epic fantasy with various social themes.
In 2005, I wrote about sex, gender, and societal constraints.
In 2006, I wrote a science-fiction novel about a human clone, involving debates on religion, scientific ethic, free will, and the state of the soul.
In 2007, it sucked. Never mind.
In 2008, I'm writing a story about a band.
No, really.
The band is named "The Dodgeball Conspiracy" (because their more creative names didn't pass the PC test). The band began when its members were in their final years of high school, and at the point where the story begins has taken off and become the sort of group that inspires 13-year-olds to flood message boards with declarations of their future elopement. Its fanbase, as I've described it elsewhere, is made up primarily of "teenagers and ironic twenty-somethings", though, as with anything, there are exceptions on either end of that scale.
TDC's members are: Corin Allen (lead vocals), Ezra Openowski (lyricist, lead guitar), Charlie MacKendrick (lyricist, drums), Matt Costello (bass, music, occasional lyricist), and Andy Reed (backup vocals, music, cello). Their shticks involve ridiculous costumes (anywhere from pinstripe suits to glitter & feathers to undead mimes), Ezra and his millions of hats, massive amounts of stagegay between all members, no one realizing Charlie is actually a girl, and songs that are a mix of happy, silly, word-punny, unexpected, and occasionally sincere/sweet.
The story itself (without spoiling anyone) takes place during the tour for their third album and afterward. It involves antics, an Internet scavenger hunt, a romance that is not so much "romantic" as it is "exasperated", an Incident that makes it not so funny for a while, various hijinks, and an exploding bus.
Excerpt: The Dodgeball Conspiracy
It was the fifth time Ezra slammed Corin up against the lockers when he had to admit that maybe he had a thing for it. He, himself, that was. Corin just looked prissily annoyed that his hair was mussed from it or something. It was hard to follow exactly what Corin said when his stupid frizzed up hair was in his eyes and he was yelling about Ezra being a psychopath and there was an assistant principal pushing through the ring of kids to break up the fight and give them another detention where they'd have to sit next to each other in the science lab for hours not saying anything and Ezra would forever associate pickled dissection worms with sexual frustration.
