Excerpt: The Water Dragon

“What do you know about the Dragons?”
“There were four of them,” Marek said, remembering his mythology lessons. “The Earth Dragon, the Water Dragon, the Air Dragon and the Fire Dragon. They ruled the humans of the world fairly and wisely, and they chose a representative – the Dragon’s Son – who would communicate to the people. As their population grew, the humans also elected a representative, the King, who spoke with the dragons on their behalf. Then, five hundred years ago, the King and the Dragon’s Son had a fight, and the Earth Dragon left the alliance with his descendants. The Water Dragon vanished altogether, and the Fire Dragon took over. The Wind Dragon’s children, who had always been comparatively rare, faded away until there were very few of them left.”

“The legend says that you will restore peace and rain to the kingdom, but you don’t have to do it alone. Remember that it took four dragons to keep the peace in ancient times: The Water Dragon, generous; the Earth Dragon, loyal; the Wind Dragon, gentle; and the Fire Dragon, fierce. No eleven-year-old can do it alone, be he ever so kind or generous or good-hearted.”
