Excerpt: Dangerous To Know
"It's official," I said as I slapped down the file folder in my hand.
Tiffany looked up from the computer. It was eleven o'clock on Saturday morning and we had devoted our entire morning to research.
"It's official," I felt the need to repeat my words just in case Tiffany had missed it," Hayden Perry doesn't exist,"
"We knew that before we started looking," Tiffany said, she unscrewed the top of her water bottle and took a huge gulp," but we needed to be sure,"
"So what do we do now?" I asked the most obvious question I could think of. Actually, I wasn't thinking very much, the words came out without any effort on my part. I hadn't been thinking clearly since the whole incident with that damn guy!
In less than twenty four hours my whole life had become some strange mess of confusion. I had always been sure of myself as a spy but now I was doubting myself, wondering if I was doing something wrong.
"How could he know my name?" I asked.
Tiffany shrugged. She had given up answering my questions. I helplessly walked over to my mini fridge and pulled out a bottle of peach juice.
"What do we do now?' I repeated myself again.
Tiffany was almost growling when she came over to me.
"What?" I asked, immediately defensive.
"Stop acting like you're lost. This guy knows something, true but how can that stop you from functioning like a human being?" Tiffany grabbed my arms and shook me.
"I'm still functioning like a human being. See?" I took a gulp of my juice," And look! Now I have to use the washroom. To go pee! Like a normal human being no less,"
"Stop thinking like a scatter brain and start thinking like a spy," Tiffany said," What should we do next to track this guy down? Think!"
I nodded at Tiffany and pursed my lips in thought. I ran all our options through my head then gasped," I got it!"
