Excerpt: Flight of Fancy

When I opened the shower curtain, the cold air hit me like a wall, setting off another round of shivers. I really need to have something hot to drink on cold mornings, I decided while I got dressed. By the time I got downstairs, though, I had five minutes before the bus normally got there. I settled with a sweatshirt instead.

I made the bus, but there were no seats open. I ended up sitting next to a blond girl who was in one of my classes. Recognition sparked her face suddenly, followed by a fleeting look of fear, like a cornered animal. It was so fast that I was sure I imagined it.

“Erm. Hi?” she warbled.
