I am not writing Sci Fi this year, but a similar thread in the Fantasy forum has been fun, so I thought I would start one for the poor newly deceased Sci Fi Characters.
You can leave a note of your NaNo death count, and give a brief memorial for those characters whose passings have become part of your 2008 NaNo word count!
(We shall all join you in mourning. )

Harl Lindstrom, Space/Time Agent
The era was growing time-locked and he had orders to evacuate. But he couldn't leave the girl to watch raiders destroy her village, so he sent her up, instead. He thought she'd just make a good agent; he didn't know she was the next Time Heir. Her discovery fulfilled the purpose of the era, leaving it not only time travel-locked, but history-locked. No time traveler can enter, and no one can change the events surrounding his action.
But he married a local woman and roamed the planet accumulating data that would keep until another agent could crack back in--long years after he died of an old age. And he got what every Space/Time Agent dreams of: an Event Horizon named after him.

My opening scene is in the middle of what later is described as a massacre ... 6 ships with a minimum of 1500 people to a ship ... well, the only important characters that died were the MC's parents, so:

I killed off the first character I introduced before he even got a name. He will be pretty important later, but not in a zombie kind of way - this is sci-fi, not fantasy or horror. Shot in his own bar, what a way to go.

You'll have to read my excerpt to understand this but here goes. The Deamor are insectoid bad guys. So basically all in all who's died is about 20 S.C.F. (The good guys) officers. An S.C.F. commander who went over to the Deamor side. And about 10,000 Deamor (They work best in swarms).

But in the stories following this one, hundreds of billions will die in the culmination of a galaxy-wide jihad 40,000 yrs in the making.

Poor Anna. She starts off dead, only breathing in memory. Then my MC tries to create a clone of her using a bunch of recordings and a huge computer. So she might be coming back, in one form or another.
And I think poor little street kid Arky isn't long for this world. I see her getting shot by the crazy cop, and that right soon.

I am on the world war 3 side, though mine was seemingly not nuclear. I have depopulated a city, and, presumably, much of the planet. Cause and choice of weapon are hitherto unknown to our heroes. There is just a little bit of weirdness going on, and I am not sure how long it will take the protagonists to come across enough information to make a good guess.

Also bidding farewell is Paul, a jackass. I had no sympathy for you Paul since you were an asshole, but I'm still sorry that the aliens used you for medical testing while you were dying. Not that anyone else is going to know that. Burn in Hell.

Um, probably a couple million people died in the first two chapters of my novel. No biggie.
Some main characters have died. A man and his wife and a homeless guy named Andrew have all died by being smashed by walls in a terrifying building with a super-massive room with a foam pad and concrete cubes that people get trapped in. Pretty much the worst place you might want to be in. Not to mention long hallways with lots of rooms that have security systems that like to crush you. From my general storyline I've come up with, over 3 billion people will die by the end of the book.

Born 22 Sep 2295
Died 16 Jan 2318
RIP
A recent political science graduate, working as an office assistant and receptionist to the Senator of Earth in the Orion Senate. Drugged the Senator's coffee when promised a ridiculously large amount of money from a pharmaceutical magnate. Exited the office with his abductors, managed to get drugged herself.
Both received genetic manipulations to turn them into an avian-like alien species. Senator Gearing's transformation went over fine. Samantha's? Not so much. Rejection is a b*tch ain't it?

In my story, i'd like to leave a memoriam to a few, mostly minor characters, so the main character deaths can be a little more dramatic: Captain Heero- If it looks like pig, smells like a pig, and eats like a pig, its a complete and total bastard.
The knife assassin- His name alone is reason to kill him, out of pity, poor Dwayne.
the other assassins, shooty and boom-boom- Weren't even important enough to have names, sucks to be them. Personality of James Bond bad guy goons #34637 and #838, at least they get to die like full villians, like Blofeld or the SMERSH leader from the 1960's Casino Royale
Agatona, the writer's convenience- he was here because i needed a reason to let a bad guy live.
Dez, a Martyr- created to die, a completely unlucky hero.
Professor Strepsipteran- self-shilling whore, like an inventor who sells his stuff on TV. a secondary villain Most of these guys deserve what they get, especially the Professor, who's crushed by a black hole.
