Hey, is anyone interested in starting a critque group for real life after Nano? I have been desperately looking for a small one to meet up once a month somewhere on the Peninsula, or even in SF by the ocean....just to read what we're working on and get help/feedback? I'm only interested in people working on Lit. Fiction books, just because that's the only thing I'm super familiar with...My name is Jen Longo, friend me if you'd like to chat about i!

Would love to! Sadly, live in London, UK... But I'd also be glad to read anything emailed to me, and chat about that!

Yeah...I'm in the Uintah Basin in Utah. The best I can do is to try and start a creative writing club at my high school next year. =/ laaaaaaame.

I'm in lower Michigan, I don't think that helps much =/ but I'd also be interested in an online based group.

That sounds GREAT... but I'm on the wrong coast. :(

Ditto, but I'm 2 hours south of the north coast (Lake Erie). Would be interested in on-line though.

likewise, as above. i'm in tacoma, wa. but i'm good on the email circuit. i do long for some external motivation to write during the rest of the year, as my internal motivation is rarely sufficient, unfortunately.
jen - thanks for sticking your neck out!

I need motivation, too, and that's why I've loved this, my first NaNo. It MAKES me write. Life has a way of interfering but other people can push you along. Unfortunately, I don't know anyone who writes much in real life. It's like working out, you know. They say people stick with it better if they have friends to go to the gym with.
What would an online group entail? A forum like this?

probably that and a lot of IM and e-mail connection

That's not hard to set up on Google Groups or something. It's just a matter of getting people together.

I've never used Google Groups before, but I'd be willing to try. Sounds like the group could have a Beta/Gamma flow. Could be pretty nifty on a wider scale. Perhaps we should try to incorporate other genres as well?

Opening a forum sounds great :) Be sure to post up the details. An online writing community would be a great motivator.
Sounds like you might have to trawl your regional forum to find locals to meet up with though.

I could set it up as soon a I have a minute. Right now I'm camping in my old apartment in an inflatable mattress :)
It just depends on how many people would be interested. Anyone with ideas for a title? I'm notoriously bad at titles.

possible group title: off-season nanoers? not much of a ring to that, is there? but something to that effect, perhaps.
does the group require a title?
heck - i haven't come up with a title for my own novel yet! - or, i come up with a new title just about every day, and none seems to stick.

Ha! I like the idea, yeah.
Why not have something to identify ourselves with?
The Nano Alliance?
The Leage of Extraordinary GentleWriters?
Close Encounters of the Nano Kind?
We're Nanoers with a year-round mission.
Our slogan: That novel won't wait eleven more months!
We really need a good location. Is this where we're doing business or should we start a new thread? And are we promising to be devoted to the cause?

I'd be interested in an online critique group, Jen. But I think you were meaning a group to get together in real life? I would love to see California and particularly San Francisco but it's a longway from Virginia!

have i answered already in the affirmative?
if not, let me say "affirmative"! i am totally down with an online critique group with the likes of you. it sounds fabulous. give me the website or whatever, however these things work, i'm too old to figure that stuff out.
i've never been to san fransisco and would love to go! but an online group might be more practical at this stage in my life.

For an online writing forum you might also look at the Wetpaint site. I've been involved in a couple of writer's groups on that and it works quite well. The important thing to remember is that whatever set up you choose, make sure that it isn't open to the general public if you are posting your work. A password protected site is fine, but if you post your work on the general internet where anyone can read it, it is then considered "published." For example, if you put up a short story for people to look at, and if you then want to submit that story to a literary journal, they will refuse it, as they only take unpublished stories. (They actually google stories to make sure they have not been available on line before they accept them.)
Just some things to keep in mind.

GREAT NEWS FELLOW NANOERS!
I am in the midst of establishing a site.
I used the advice posted above and I've decided to start out with wetpaint.com
if that doesn't work out we can go a different way.
In order to access the site I'll need to send you an invitation via e-mail.
If you're interested in joining the group please post your e-mail here, or message it to me, thanks!

Since this is not Literary Fiction specific, I'm going to lock down this topic.
Please keep an eye out at the end of the month for the Critiques forum, right here on NaNoWriMo!
If you would like to post a promotional topic regarding this group, feel free to do so in the Marketing and Self Promotion forum. I have already moved a similar topic to that forum: http://www.nanowrimo.org/eng/node/3140288
