My characters in my romance haven't even gotten together yet and I've already reached 50,000. Anyone else facing the dilemma of an unfinished story- but finished NaNoWriMo? Any thoughts on continuing past December 1st?

My characters still have to get together as well, I plan to finish the story and let them have each other before November ends.

I'm pretty close to finishing the story... but I have much to add.

I have no idea where I'm going with my story, but I know it's not done.
I think I'll take a break from it in December and focus on some of my other things and then come back to edit and finish my NaNo eventually.

you are not alone. Nope, I've got to somehow get my fmc out of her troublesome spot alive and well so there can be the squishy romantic happy ending...

The story is almost done, but there are a couple of things that the characters need to do to wrap things up. Odds are this won't be done until mid-december (I need a tiny break) and I'm alright with that. It's at a publishable length but yeah once the editing gets going this story is going to grow as I went fast through parts I just could not stand to write with a deadline.

I'm not done, but getting closer!
Of course, then i have to like, redo parts, and add in stuff, so. Yes, I'm unfinished. And nearing 57k. Oops.

I'm not done, but I hope to be close (or closer) to finishing by the end of November. In fact, I just hit the climax. Fortunately, the climax is nearer to the end, but still. It was exciting to reach 50k, but it'll be even more exciting to finish the thing.

This is very much me. I finished on the 23rd and ended up with less than half my story done. Eep! So I'm writing a semi-outline, semi-really short 3/4 of the book...But now I'm really into it, and I'm going to go back when I finish with the "ending" and re-write it to get it done. I don't know HOW I'm going to stay motivated past Nov. 30th, though! -.-

50,000 words really isn't a publishable novel if you want it to go into print. You could probably get it published as an ebook, but it would be too short for most publishers to put it into a print book. That's what happened to my first NaNo back in 2005. I ended up writing a second book in the series and they were put into print in one volume.
So don't worry that you're not finished with the story yet. You're probably more than half-way there! (Depending on your final word count.) I always aim for about 90,000 words. 80,000 is good, but a little short and over 100,000 is bordering on the edge of "getting too long" for many publishers. If I end up somewhere between 80 and 90k, I'm happy.
Good luck with the rest of your novels! :)

I'm closer than last year...I had about another two months of writing. This year I think it will only be a couple of days. I have finished them in other years, but ya know...sometimes the characters just take off and aren't done at 50,000 words!! Good job everyone!

Just a hair over thirty thousand, when my eldest child just got into some hot water over the TG holiday, and now its like my vibe and creativity vamoshed! I've lost the 'everything's right with the world' mood....But I've never done nano, so I hope to be more on top of it next year.
I just want said child, to come out of their troubles all right.
Then I can go back to writing....
Have a writer/friend who had to write while a relative was dying due to being under contract to finish a book, so I guess that makes me a wimp..lol
Can't write unless okay/happy-somewhat,is that weird? Or common?

My two MC's only got together about 4000 words ago and I still have so much to write... I just hope it doesn't take me another 50.000 words to finish this^^. I still have to write a few nice and romantic scenes for them, I have to let them face some problems, then my one MC's friends will have some relationship issues as well and then my MC's have to be found out and face all the drama... *sighs*
I'll try to continue writing 1667 words every day so that I actually get this story finished someday. I just hope I can keep this up. I've growm rather fond of my story, I don't want to just abandon it.

It's quite common. You are an artist, and as such you are even more likely to be sensitive to moods & atmosphere than the people around you. In order to do work properly, you need certain things to happen. When those things are disrupted, you cannot work.
Some people force themselves to write. If you can do that & not create garbage, good for you. If all you'll do is stink up the joint, don't do it.
Now, you can always go over what you last wrote and do some editing, and that will sometimes help. But if the outside influences are too disruptive, step back & let it be.

Just crossed the 50k Finish Line, but there are about 10k words between here and the end of the story. My outline is pretty strong, so I should be done by this time next week, latest.
Now I've got to take a break, eat something and find my credit card so I can donate!

Stupid holiday in the middle of nano made it so that I had to scramble to finish by midnight. I put my final word count in at 11:30 last night. However, it crossed the finish line into 50K and I couldn't be happier. That being said, I am about 2/3 of the way through my book, which is where I planned to be at 50K but it's not nearly the end. I've just broken my characters up for 8 years and they're getting ready to get reacquainted.
Congrats everyone!

I still have so much to write it's not even funny. I the last thing I wrote before I hit 50k was a scene about 2/3 of the way through the story. However, I skipped so much before that I don't think I can possibly be more than about half done. I am seriously in love with my story, though (and my main character. What? I'm not psychotic, no, why do you ask?) so I'm hoping that I'll be able to find the motivation to finish.
Congrats to everyone!

I worry about people who don't love their MCs.
All writers should love their MCs. Now, whether or not they like YOU is another matter altogether!

50,000 and I'm not finished yet either, but I'm close.
I already outlined the story in October and I'm through most of the outline, but I still have a little bit more to write and I'm hoping to get that bit (which can't compare to 50,000 words) done by the New Year.

I hate not being done but I keep adding these stupid conversations even though the main problem of the story is solved. Guess I just don't want my story to be over : (
