Anybody have suggestions as to what to name this ship?
The time period is WWII, and it's an American ship, probably a carrier; may also be a battleship of some type. I'm trying to find a name that serves as a metaphor for my MC, and I'm looking for something along the lines of Freedom or Independence, but also something that implies freedom in a bold, defiant, rebellious, audacious sort of way. I went through the thesaurus multiple times but am stumped on this one! It should also be something fairly original so as not to copy the name of any actual ship. I was thinking something like "Unshackled," but U.S.S. Unshackled doesn't have much of a ring to it I'd say...:)
Suggestions appreciated!

Check out some Star Trek ship names. It sounds strange, but they've got some pretty good ship names:

S.S.S Eleutherian
(1623, from Gk. eleutherios "like a free man, noble-minded, frank, liberal," lit. "freeing, delivering, releaser," title of Zeus as protector of political freedom, from eleutheria "freedom," from PIE *leu-dheros. --from etymonline.com)

The US navy has had guidelines for naming various classes of ships. (True, these guidelines have been repeatedly broken, this gives you good cover for whatever artistic license you invoke.)
During the WWII era, carriers were normally named for battles. These mainly came from the American Revolution, but there's a smattering of other wars as well (e.g. War for Texas Independce, Civil, Spanish American,...)
Battleships were named for states.
If you are striving for historical compatibility, you might follow the guidelines (and avoiding actual US vessels if you didn
t want to inherit too much authenticity/legacy.) I looked at the list of actual US WWII carriers, and tried to find an unclaimed battle... I came up with "Lake Erie", now it's a modern day Ticonderoga-class cruiser, but a quick Google search didn't show any WWII predecessor.
You'd be outside the guidelines if you take the metaphorical naming route, but so is the actual carrier USS Intrepid. You might look at a list of British naval vessels, as I recall, many of them are along the concept of "fine-sounding names", e.g. Renown, Audacious, Courageous ....

What he said.
Also - - there's the carrier Enterprise - - both a WWII era carrier, and in the new incarnation as the first nuclear powered carrier.
You would go for Cruisers - they were generally cities.
Destroyers - - - they were named mostly after people - - war heroes, I'm guessing. Shaw, Kidd, Reuben James, come to mind.

USS Reprisal (CV-35) was cancelled and sold for scrap. So there's a free name.
The first dates from 1776.

Thanks everybody for the suggestions, and especially for the historical information. I am leaning toward Eleutherian--that really is a cool name!--but it's iffy, so I'm still open to suggestions! Thank you everybody. :D

USS Renegade.
Renegade is totally the name of my rebel organization, but it works.
Or the USS Cavalier.

Well, resistance means defiance, so you could have the USS Resistance. Or maybe the Relentless.
Maybe the USS Sovereignty. Definitely implies independence...heh.
You could go noble with the USS Gallantry or the USS Valor. Just straightforward, those.
I know. A pitiful showing from a Navy brat.
