Excerpt: Liquid Film
He had no car and as such would be hoofing it the two miles back to his home through the rain and the muck. Andrew could already hear the lecture he would receive when he walked in drenched and covered in mud up to his knees but he was so used to it he simply didn't care any longer. Walking up the hill to the main road was a difficult task. For every two steps he took he slid back down at least six inches. Each time he pulled his boot clad foot up to make the next step a squelching noise could be heard coming from the suction in the mud. It was slow going making it the forty yards up the slipper slope. Finally he reached the black asphalt and stopped to catch his breath. As he bent over with his hands on his knees he heard a twig snap behind him. Startled he turned to see what was there but saw nothing. Chalking it up to an animal trying to find a shelter away from the rain he continued walking to find his own shelter. Though his home had never been a shelter to him he never the less wished for a place out of the torrential downpour that had come along. Andrew had walked those roads 100s of times during his life so had no problem walking them in the almost pitch black. He figured he could do it with his eyes closed even. The problem came when he couldn't hear an approaching car until it was right up on him. Whoever it was had to be speeding and obviously couldn't see him until they were right up on him. Andrew gritted his teeth in anger and stepped to the side of the road cursing them for not following the law especially in such a dangerous situation.
The car continued toward him until it was right on him and he realized they weren't even on the road. It looked like they were careening out of control. He threw himself into the ditch just in time to barely miss becoming road kill. Sliding down into the muddy and disgusting ditch he finally stopped with a thud when he hit the bottom. “That's just fucking great,” he muttered to himself. “Now I'm really going to be mince meat when I get home. Thanks a lot asshole.” Andrew hadn't even stopped to consider the possibility that they may have been following him as there usually wasn't a soul on that particular road especially that late at night. He clawed his way back up the embankment and set off on his walk again cursing the out of control jerk under his breath all the way home.
