Excerpt: My Temporarily Borrowed Life

The first few hours started out as they had many times before with the house as silent as if it were not occupied. The occasional cricket or the odd scattering of a rat was all that could be heard. But then there was her.

Head in the toilet, black hair roughly tied back with a bow. A mix of eyeliner and mascara steaming down her face with her tears. Sitting on the tiles, impossibly cold, yet burning to the touch. For a moment, she is almost sure that she is the only living thing left in the world, except for maybe the crickets and the rats.
