Excerpt: Creep
“Too damn early to be out here,” Jay says, lighting a cigarette. We didn’t have to leave until later, when he drove. His car has been a piece of junk for as long as he’s had it and it finally gave in; he had it towed to the shop Saturday night.
“It’s fucking cold,” I say, hands dug as deep into my pockets as I can get them, breathing out clouds of smoke.
He gives me a look like I’m an idiot. “Why didn’t you wear a coat?”
“I didn’t know.”
He shrugs and turns to watch for the bus. “Suck it up,” he says, with a hint of making fun of me but a hint of something else too. “I’m not giving you mine.”
The bus doesn’t come. I wonder if it’s ever going to come. It’s still almost dark, the sun is barely over the tops of the houses and the sky is grey. There’s no one else out here, no one would want to be out here. Jay sees me shivering, my bare arms pressed as tightly as possible to my sides, and puts his arm around me, holding me against the warmth of his leather jacket.
He says, “If anyone asks, I didn’t do this, okay?”
With his arm blocking my vision I smile because I know Jay was lying when he said he doesn’t love anything.
