I have been trying and trying to keep on top of word goals, but some days it just doesn't happen.
I started late because of computer issues and I haven't been able to catch up - but I refuse to give up! It's my first nano, and I'm not going to let myself fail. I've stocked up on coffee and fruit, I carry around a small notebook with me ALL the time just in case inspiration gets tired of banging it's head against the wall and decides to strike with a vengeance.
Is there anyone out there with the same problem, and the same determination? This is not a thread for people who are ready to give up. If you need a nudge, that's fine, but we're going to get through it. Lets's do this thing!
Feel free to add me, i'll do the same.
The coffee pot is full, so come one in, grab a seat and get writing.

I'm with you!
I am EXTREMELY far behind for many reasons. Giving up did seem very, very tempting. What's worse is that I started on day one... heh.
But I decided to get off my butt (well... maybe not literally) and try my best to catch up!

I started on the 10th; I'm catching up on word count, even though I'm 4.5k words short of today's word goal -- I know I'll conquer this thing, as long as I get about 40k words by the end of the weekend

Wow! That's some great determination right there. I'm feeling
slightlyreally motivated already! Yay!We can do this! I'm almost to 9000 words behind, and I can't leave work this afternoon until I have 15 000. That's my primary goal today, but I would love to hit maybe 17 000 tonight if I can. There's a busy weekend ahead - unfortunately not of writing - so I try to write whenever I get some time.

I second that....Kamikaze mode on evil got me to 12 000 the other day. That's just too scary!
It has 3 modes.
On gentle, you get a friendly warning when you stop typing for too long.
On normal, it plays some terrible sounds to act as negative stimuli (think Hanson, a baby crying etc)
On kamikaze, it deletes your work one word at a time.
He recently changed it too, so now you cans elect how strict you want it to be, and that changes how long you can stop typing before being warned etc, or how fast your work disappears!I wonder when Electric Shock mode will be up and running! >_<
Note: I added everyone who has posted so far. I hope you don't mind.

I'm a late bloomer, too!
I just started yesterday and am feeling awfully lonely. I'm really glad I found this thread!
I'm all like... "Crap! Who are my characters?" and "Plot? Plot? Anybody have a plot?" I have about half of the month to go, but I'm still trying to hash out my outline and my characters. lol. I did write about 1500 words, but I'm fine-tuning my outline and characters so that I think I'll probably only keep 500 or so. Oy.
Anyway, let me know if any of my fellow late bloomers wanna word war or something.
Also, I made a latecomer calendar beginning on the 16th. That's right - the 16th. I'm giving us a few days to plot out the basics and to turtle along before we get to the nitty gritty Write-or-Die stuff. That said, I totally used Write-or-Die. That's some good stuff, right there.

I guess I count as a late bloomer. I was not only out of town, but out of country when Nano started. I did have plans for writing... but they just flew out the window, along with all my wonderful plots and characters and motivation and inspiration (on the bright side: my inner editor is gone, too. I actually think he stole all the afore-mentioned things in protest of me locking him away, yet again, for the month of November).
I wrote 120 words before I came back home. Today... I'm up to 2208 words. My new story idea came from a dream I had last night... but I'm not sure if i'll be using it for hte novel, or just "something to write as i'm brainstorming what i want to write".

This is the first year that I thought that I could actually devote the entire month to Nano. Usually, I just write like mad at intervals throughout the year. I had it all planned out. My husband is out of town on business for the entire month & I just knew that I'd finish my MS first draft long before Thanksgiving (I'll be visiting family out of town).
Guess what? I got a terrible case of strep. I've been worthless for an entire week now. I finally broke down & went to the doctor & got antibiotics (which I am usually loathe to take). Hopefully, within a day or two I will feel like a human being again & get back to writing.
As it stands, I doubt very much that I'll finish my first draft by the end of the month. At least I'm off to a good start.
Who knows, maybe I'll get a fantastic burst of energy & mental clarity when the antibiotics start kicking butt.
Anyone else out there running into a similar experience?

No joke, this is the best I've ever done at NaNoWriMo, and I'm certainly not giving up now! I've got time to sneak in a few words at work, plenty of music on the iTunes, and enough caffeine in my blood to fuel a Hummer. I'm set. :-)

I feel exactly the same! I had tech week for a show I was in, and I didn't write at all that week, which brought me insanely behind. I didn't do as much work as I should've this week either, and I've figured that I have to write at least 4000 words every day this weekend to catch up.
Once I get started writing I can usually pump stuff out pretty fast, since I love to write and have a constant commentary going on in my head, but it's hard to start. I have a lot of college and homework stuff to be doing, and it's hard to do NaNo when my parents are pressuring me so much to concentrate on that stuff. But I already have over 4000 words for today, and I just need to keep plugging!
I'm really determined to finish, since I always think about writing novels, like a new idea for a story pops into my head every other day, but I'm such a procrastinator that I never get around to actually doing something about it.
I'm just going to channel Barack Obama for the rest of this time...YES WE CAN! Haha

I got off to a slow start (well actually, the first day I made the 1667 goal, but it's been downhill from there...), what with the election and work/travel. Added to that I was really having a hard time getting into the story, and I can't get as much done as I'd like to on weeknights. BUT, this morning the story just started coming to life, I've canceled all my plans for this weekend, and I'm just going to play hermit and write, write, write for two whole days. I'm still determined to finish past 50K. I figure if I can get to 20 K by the end of this weekend, and then get in 15K each of the next 2 weekends (3-day and 4-Day!!), I'll make it.
We CAN do it!

I wasn't exactly a late bloomer, but I did start my story over again. I'm still behind now and hoping that I can catch up. It hasn't been a good couple of days when it comes to writing. I've been so damned tired.

Oh, man, I've been typing like crazy. I think I might lose a finger or two before this whole thing is over. I meant to start on the 1st, but it slipped my mind, and I didn't start writing until the 10th. And I had no idea what I was going to write about! I just started banging on the keyboard, keeping a bit of faith that a story would unfold. And I'm happy to report that it is unfolding, and I'm approaching the 20,000 word mark (should hit it tomorrow morning).
It's nice to know there are others in the same boat. There's something really comforting about knowing other people are just as frantic/miserable/overjoyed as me. I've been needing a swift kick to really get writing, and overall, these few days have been a great experience. This is my first NaNoWriMo, and I'm loving it. Keep it up, late bloomers!

But, i am freakin' determined to crank out these 50,000 + Words, regardless of the situation. Tonight i'm thinking of going without sleep and getting to that 20,000 word mark. Damn you goals!

Hee. I'm such a goober. I had an outline, characters, and a plan waaaaaay back in September. I was all hyped about it and then.... Well, school attacked with a vengeance. November 8th hit, and suddenly it was "whoops, NANOWRIMO!!!!" :P So yeah, late bloomer here. But on the bright side, I'm determined not to go to bed without at least 5000 words under my belt, and I've already got 1630 for today. :D Maybe I'll get on a roll and get even more than that done. Stranger things have happened.
One thing that has made it easier is that when I find myself getting bored with a scene, I lazily skip through it in a few sentences until I get to the next scene that piques my interest. Then I mark the "skipped" scene for possible expansion later. This is really only possible because I have a written outline. But then, I'd never be able to write a coherent story without some kind of outline. I have a tendency to ramble if I don't have a plan. :P
Anyhow, good luck all you people! You have no idea how comforting it is to find out there are plenty of people in the same "league" as me that haven't given up. It's a bit demoralizing to run around the forums and see people who've already hit 35, 40, or even 50K! I'm convinced that we can do it, though!
So, back to writing with me. :D

the fact that i started on the 11th didn't do much for my confidence, but i try not to get discuraged. My problem, though, is the fact that i have no plot. literraly no plot. That's the problem with avant-guard literature. You have no idea what it is you're doing, actually.

I started on the 9th but I know I can do this. There are some parts where words just keep coming and some parts where I have to keep thinking for words but I'm not gonna give up. I had thoughts of switching to a new story but after reading Meg Cabot's pep talk, those thoughts are no more.

I decided november 1st sharp that I was going to join this year's NaNo after all, but I didn't really grasp the concept of "writing every day". I thought I could just scramble along writing too little for a bit, and then do nothing for a day or four...
But I'm back with a vengeance! I'm still not making my prospected word count, but I'm steadily clawing away at the backlog. I'm writing just over 2000 words a day with lots of effort not going into schoolwork, but darn it, NaNo's exactly where that effort needs to be.
And incidentally, Meg Cabot's pep talk couldn't have had more perfect timing. No changing stories halfway for me; this is my plot and it's going to make it.

This is my first nano after a few years of saying, "Well, I'd love to, but I have so much work ..." Finally got talked into it by my best friend, started lacklustrely since I moved on the first weekend of November, had two parties to go to and lost my purse with my life in it. But it was ok, since I'd probably be unemployed for nearly the whole month and I could do nothing but write!
Have managed nearly 11,000 words so far, so I'm way behind schedule, and - oops! - I start my new job on Monday. No idea how I'm going to catch up, but dammit I'm going to try!

I started on the 12th, so I'm wayyy behind. I kind of joined on impulse, it looked like a fun idea :) It's my first nano, and I'm attempting to fit in writing between school till 5pm and the scary mountain of homework staring at me from my desk. I don't even know where my story's going, I'm kind of just winging it really :P In hindsight, it was probably a silly thing to do, but now I've started I'm not going to let myself give up!
